HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
LeVeque Tower is located at 50 West Broad Street in Columbus, Ohio. The 45-story building
was constructed between 1924 and 1927 for the American Insurance Union. It was known as
the American Insurance Union Citadel until 1945 when it was purchased by Leslie L.
LeVeque and John Lincoln. From 1945 to 1977 it was called the LeVeque Lincoln Tower.
Since 1977 it has been called the LeVeque Tower. It was the tallest skyscraper in Columbus
from the time it was built until 2002.
Marie W. Vandegrift worked at several radio stations during her career, including WAIU and
WJAY. At WPAY radio station she was the general manager. Additionally, Vandegrift
wrote feature stories for The Sunday Dispatch and served as editor of “A.I.U. Magazine.”
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
This collection contains manuscript material and photographs that pertain to the
construction of the American Insurance Union building, as well as the career Mrs. Marie W.
Vandegrift and the Vandegrift and Williams families. The manuscript material includes life
insurance policies, some newspaper articles, and letters. The photographs of the American
Insurance Union building include shots of the construction during the 1920’s. There are also
photographs of Columbus, Ohio taken from the building. The family photographs depict
Christmas scenes, homes, and vacations.
