HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Isabel Hatton was the only child of Belle Macrae Kinsman and Ellmore (Sellmon) Wright
Hatton. Born in 1907 in Columbus, Ohio she was surrounded by Kinsman aunts and Hatton
uncles who all lived in the Columbus, Ohio area. Her father and his youngest brother, Charles
Forest Hatton brought the Hatton Brothers Pharmacy to Columbus from Zanesville after
their father, David, died in 1889. They located the shop at 90/92 N. High St. in downtown
Columbus.
Isabel’s maternal grandfather, Dr. David N. Kinsman, was a well known expert on the
diseases of women and children. He was active in Cincinnati and Lancaster, Ohio during and
after the Civil War and brought his wife, Isabelle Stevens and their three daughters to
Columbus in 1871 when he accepted a position at the Starling Medical College. He would
later become a professor and dean at The Columbus Medical College and Chancellor of the
Ohio Medical University.
Young Isabel grew up amongst the two families and was close to her first cousin, Rhea (Ray)
(1887-1962), the son of Alice Bertha Kinsman Waters. Rhea Kinsman-Waters became an
artist who studied with Alice Schille and attended the Columbus Art School. He contributed
work to shows in Chicago, New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio becoming an accomplished
