State Archives Series 2751 AV State Office Building Commission Ohio State Office Building Construction Page 1 OHIO HISTORICAL SOCIETY State Archives Record Series SA 2751 AV STATE OFFICE BUILDING COMMISSION Ohio State Office Building Construction OVERVIEW OF THE SERIES Series Number: SA 2751 AV Creating Agency: State Office Building Commission Series Title: Ohio State Office Building Construction Dates of Series: Ca. 1929-1931 Media: Glass plate negatives Quantity: 0.12 cubic feet Location: Ohio Historical Center AGENCY BACKGROUND The State Office Building Commission operated from 1923 to 1934. The legislation creating the Commission was House Bill No. 264. This bill charged the commission members with acquiring a site and erecting a state office building. The first commission meeting was held on September 7, 1923 with original members, Governor A. Victor Donahey, Attorney General C. C. Crabbe and Auditor of State Jos. T. Tracy. The commission met for the last time on December 27, 1934. Having completed their work, those serving on the commission turned in their letters of resignation to Governor George White. Groundbreaking for the Ohio State Office Building took place on November 19, 1929. The building, located at 65 South Front Street in downtown Columbus, took the site of 34 businesses. The building, designed by architects Harry Hake, Frank Bail and Alfred Hahn, is noted as an excellent example of architecture from the Art Deco period. Construction began on October 31, 1930 and the cornerstone was laid on May 16, 1931. The building was nearing completion when a high-pressure gas line that ran under the sidewalk of Scioto Boulevard exploded on April 14, 1932. The explosion significantly damaged the unfinished Building. The building eventually opened on March 27, 1933. Originally the building was used for public assemblies and hearings, offices of state commissions and the State Library of Ohio. The Ohio General Assembly appropriated funds to renovate the building for use by the Supreme Court of Ohio in 1998 and 2000. The Supreme Court moved into the building in February 2004.
