AGENCY BACKGROUND
The Anthony Wayne Parkway Board was active from 1947-1963. It consisted of eleven
members including the Director of Highways, the director of the Ohio Historical Society,
the Director of Public Works, the State Forester, the Conservation Commissioner and six
members appointed by the governor. Membership dropped to ten when the Director of
Natural Resources replaced the State Forester and Conservation Commissioner. The
Board defined its objectives as:
1. The planning of a program for the development of parkways and routes for marking
historical sites.
2. The encouragement of research in the history of the Old Northwest Territory and the
erection of a program for the publication of the results.
3. The promotion of a program of education disseminating information concerning
Anthony Wayne and the Old Northwest Territory.
4. The promotion of historical celebrations commemorative of the period of General
Wayne’s military campaigns in the Old Northwest Territory.
5. To encourage the planning and establishment of recreational areas in the Parkway
district.
When the Board became inactive the Ohio Historical Society absorbed all historical
related functions.
