AGENCY BACKGROUND The Historical Commission of Ohio was appointed by
Governor James M. Cox in February 1918, as the official agency of the state for the
collection and preservation of records and materials pertaining to Ohio’s part in World
War I. Governor Cox appointed nineteen members, mostly professors of history in the
colleges of Ohio. The Commission worked under a cooperative agreement with the Ohio
State Archaeological and Historical Society (now the Ohio Historical Society). The
Commission was headquartered within the Society’s building in Columbus, Ohio and
with the approval of the Governor’s Office, its collections were stored in the collection
facilities of the Society.
With Columbus, Ohio serving as the centralized collection point for the war records, the
Historical Commission of Ohio also appointed Chairmen of county branches of the
Commission. These Chairmen were charged with the responsibility of collecting war
records and materials on a community level and then forwarding them on to Columbus.
