AGENCY BACKGROUND
Walter Tucker majored in journalism at the Ohio State University and went on to work at
the Columbus Dispatch. For twenty-five years he worked as an editorial cartoonist and
special features writer concentrating mainly on gardening and conservation. He retired
from the Columbus Dispatch in 1946.
Tucker was appointed in early 1945 as secretary of a select committee jointly
established by the Board of Franklin County Commissioners and Columbus City Council
to study the park issue. In August the committee’s findings and recommendations were
put into effect with the creation of the Columbus and Franklin County Metropolitan Park
District. He served as acting secretary until 1947 and then as director-secretary until
1971.
In November of 1984 he received the award for “Individual Contribution over a Lifetime”
by the Ohio Alliance for Environmental Education for his work with the Columbus
Metroparks. Tucker died November 19, 1986.
