AGENCY BACKGROUND
The Ohio Department of Agriculture was established in 1846 and originally known as the
Ohio State Board of Agriculture. In 1913 the name was changed to the Agricultural
Commission. The Agricultural Commission assumed all responsibilities formerly held by
the State Board of Agriculture, the State Agricultural Experiment Station, the Dairy and
Food Commissioner, the Commissioners of Fish and Game, the State Board of
Veterinary Examiners and some duties of the State Board of Pharmacy. Re-established
in 1915, the State Board of Agriculture included the following bureaus: Dairy and Food
Inspection, Fair Administration, Feed and Fertilizers, Fish and Game, Horticulture,
Livestock Industry and Markets and Agriculture Statistics. From 1915 to 1921, a number
of bureaus and duties were added to the board. After reorganization in 1921 the
responsibilities of the Board were divided between five divisions: Animal Industry, Fish
and Game, Foods and Dairies, Plant Industry and State Fair. Throughout the 20th
century the responsibilities of divisions within the Department of Agriculture continued to
change. In 2000 there were eight programs overseen by the Department: General
Agriculture, Ride Inspection, Food, Dairies and Drugs, Agriculture Market Development,
Plant Industry, Weights and Measures, Animal Industry and Consumer Analytical
Laboratory.
