AGENCY BACKGROUND
Since 1961, when this commission replaced the Division of State Fair in the Department of
Agriculture, it had the authority to manage the state and other fairs and displays. Operating
as an independent entity, the commission is comprised of sixteen members, fifteen
appointed by the governor with advice and consent of the senate, and the Director of
Agriculture.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE SERIES
The Ohio Expositions Center Commission Photograph Collection consists of black and white
photographs (with approximately ten color photographs) most of which are 8" x 10". There
are some snapshots. There is one photograph early fair exhibit (1907, Box 2, Folder 9) and
there are photographs taken as late as 1970. The majority of the photographs, however,
were between 1955-1968. The bulk of the collection (approximately 1/2) consists of animal
photos most of which are horses. There are also many photos of people in fair activities and
of fair structures. The research value of this collection is high since it is a fine documentation
of many different types of State Fair activities, particularly horsemanship and livestock
activities. It is also a good indication of how the State Fair has changed and grown over the
years.
