HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
Ralph Ramey is best known for his many endeavors in the field of Natural History. It was this interest in natural history that enticed him into the world of photography while he was still in high school in Bexley, Ohio. His first camera was an Argus C-3. While a student at The Ohio State University, he helped support himself by selling cameras at Columbus stores.
Between 1966 and 1973 Ramey worked as a naturalist, first for the Ohio State Parks and then Columbus and Franklin County Park District. In 1973 he became Director of the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, which he left in 1990 to become Director of the Miami County Park District. Ramey spent his last three years of employment as Chief of the Ohio Dept. of Natural Resources, Division of Natural Areas and Preserves, from which he retired in 1994. He is a prolific writer, with several books to his credit, including Fifty Hikes in Ohio. He is a member of 44 different conservation organizations and at least 15 historical organizations. In 2006 he was inducted into Ohio’s prestigious Natural Resources Hall of Fame.
