HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
The 1937-1938 Northwest Territory Sesquicentennial Celebration was a federally funded year long celebration which commemorated the journey of the Ohio Company of Associates of 48 men, who traveled westward from Ipswich, Massachusetts to Marietta, Ohio in 1787. A main feature of the celebration was to recruit a caravan of 36 men to re-create the journey. The men left on the same date as the Ohio Company and traveled on foot with a Conestoga wagon pulled by Oxen. At each stop the pioneers presented a “pageant” called “Freedom on the March.” The party was given buckskin clothing and tools of the 1700s to build a flat boat and canoes to travel to Marietta by flat boat after the 52 day trek to West Newton, Pennsylvania. The young college men and trained actors stayed in touch with reunions over the years. They had a final reunion re-enactment of the 1937 trek in 1987. Carl Givler and four other men made the reunion trek.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
The Carl Givler Collection contains photographs, maps of the route and printed material detailing the 1937 re-enactment of the 800 mile journey trip from Ipswich, Massachusetts to Marietta, Ohio to commemorate the 150 anniversary of the Ohio Company arriving in the Northwest Territory. Carl Givler of Greenville, Ohio was one of 36 men hired to recreate the Northwest Territory trek. His personal memorabilia and photographs constitute a large portion of the collection. The collection also holds printed material and newspaper articles related to the original Sesquicentennial Celebration in 1937 and 1938. Newspaper articles from the 1970s and 1980s document the reunions of the 36 men who made the trek. Film negatives dating from
