HISTORICAL SKETCH OF THE COLLECTION
At its founding on July 3, 1924 the Franklin Garden Club was the first garden club in Franklin County, Ohio. The purpose of the club was to stimulate interest in gardening and the advancement of civic beautification. The membership is composed of no more than 65 active members.
SCOPE AND CONTENTS OF THE COLLECTION
This collection documents the general activities, events and civic projects of the Franklin Garden Club of central Ohio during the mid to late 20th century. It includes a range of past president’s papers, meeting minutes, directories, program planning materials, invitations and flyers regarding the activities of the club.
An early minute book from 1924 details the activities of the group until 1934. Membership lists (1948-1982) and club directories (1974-2001) record the tenure and history of its members. The President’s notebooks (1991- 2004) record the late 20th century activities of the group.
Project files such as the Garden Therapy project for mentally-challenged children, the Broadleigh Elementary School program, Columbus Zoo and gifts to the founding of public museums such as Slate Run and Thurber House highlight the civic involvement of the Franklin Garden Club. The history of its civic involvement is also found in the paper records and directories. They include civic membership to Habitat for Humanity, Inniswood Metro Park,
