And the same com¬ plaints reach us from Newark, N. J. . . . These incidents are perhaps not very serious when ' viewed singly ... And this pattern, whether certain timid Jewish souls admit it or not Is one of definite religious and political antl-Semltlsm . . . Pogroms in Poland 128 Jews Are Slain In City Of Lodz
GENEVA (WNS)—The wave of terrorism against the Jewish population in Poland is still gaining momentum and in the city of Lodz alone 128 Jews wei'e slain in the month of July, ac- cordlngto information reaching here from reliable sources in Poland.
If the small towns of Poland, where there are only few Jewish survivors, the situation is even worse, the report disclosed. Many Jews who only recent¬ ly returned to their home towns are reported fleeing pell mell In the hope of finding shelter- Bands of organized terrorists, often stronger than the local po¬ lice authorities, are rpunding up Jews, terrorizing them, beating them and stealing their property. In some towns, terrorists were reported to have issued ultima¬ tums to the Jewish residents, warning them that unless they leave they would be killed. In several towns the terrorists are reported to have slain the sur¬ viving Jews who failed to heed the warning.
In Radom, a comparatively large city, the Polish terrorists posted notices that unless the Jews leave the city within twenty-four hours they would wipe out the entire Jewish pop¬ ulation. Most Jews took the warning at Its value and fled.
The plight of the Jews throughout Poland, the report disclosed. Is desperate. Jews are afraid of speaking Yiddish in public for fear of being attack¬ ed by the terrorists. Many Jevjrs, particularly women, are using spurious documents to conceal tlieir identity, as was the case during the Hitler re¬ gime.
Jewish returnees who linger¬ ed in concentration camps be¬ fore Poland's liberation have made' it clear In no uncertain terms that if the doors of Pales¬ tine were open to Jewish popu¬ lation all of Polish Jewry would trek even by foot to the Holy Land- Recently there arrived in Po¬ land a group of 720 Jewish wo¬ men, men, and children who were liberated from a German concentration camp. When they learned what was happening to the Jews in Poland, they hid in woods and forests instead of re¬ turning to their former homes. After two weeks in hiding they reumed to Munich, where they related that the Jews In Poland are facing the same danger as in the days of Hitler.
Most of the Polish Jews who fled the wave of terrorism are hoping to reach the American and British occupation Zones.
Nor is the situation of the Jews in Lower Silesia any bet¬ ter: Of 176 Jews wlio recently returned there from the Bergen- Beisen camp more than 70 fled back to the notorious camp. The returnees told newspaper men In Bergen-^elsen camp that they were forced to return because of the wave of antl-Semltlsra in which Poland is engulfed.

Survey Shows 5700000 Jews Murdered By Axis
NEW YORK (JPS)— Based upon statistics gathered from all available sources on the .number of Jewish civilians casualties during Axis domination in Eu¬ rope, the Institute ot Jewish Affairs, research affflllate of the World Jewish Congress and the American Jewi6h Congress, con¬ cludes that the actual number may be "very conservatively" estimated at 5,700,000, of 60 per¬ cent of the total Jewish popula¬ tion in Europe when the war began.
In Russia the Jews fared a little better than elsewhere, the report Indicates, for if Russia is excluded from the count the percentage of Jews killed or missing would reach 68 percent. None of these estimates, it is pointed out, takes into consider¬ ation the military casualties among Jews. 6

.NiEW YORK (JPS)—Dr. Max Gottschalk, Director of the For eign Affairs Department of the American - Jewish Committee, sailed for London to establish permanent headeiuarters pf the Commkttee on the European continent, in order "to place its facilities at the disposal ot the Jewish communities of Europe and to help them in the solution of such problem^ as the restora¬ tion of tiielr rights, the restitu¬ tion of property and Indemnifi¬ cation among others". From London Dr. Gottschalk will pro ceed to France, Belgium, Hol¬ land, Switzerland and other European countries.
General Arnold Heads Movement To Retire Bilbo
WASHINGTON (JPS) — A movement among MisBlssippiaris to retire Senator Bilbo by run¬ ning against him In the primar¬ ies next year, former Congress¬ man Ross A. Collins, is report- etlly supported by General H. H. Arnold, chief of the Army Air Force, who has been privately telling Mlsslssipplans that Bil¬ bo's tactics are defeating the alms for which this war was fought and has openly praised former Congressman Ross. In a speech at a public gathering he credited Collins with having heUred convince Congress of the nafd to mechanize the U. S. Army and produce heavy bomb¬ ers. Collins, for many years a member of the House of repre¬ sentatives, a staunch supporter of the late Pre.5ident Roosevelt and a progressive in his views on race and religion, ran for the Senate In 19-11 but lost out in a three cornered flight won by Bilbo.

Collin's great pawn is his contention that MIsaissipplans can get what they have wanted so long, the establishment of Industries in their State, provided Bil¬ bo is retired and the state's repu- ation thus rehabilitated. Slovakia Jewry's Plight No Better
Than Under Nazis
BOSTON (JPS)—Nearly four months after liberation the Jews In Slovakia are "being treated almost as they were by the Nazis", Joseph G. Harrison, Christian Science Monitor cor¬ respondent, cabled from Bratis¬ lava. "Despite the strictest rules that UNRRA aid must be handled out impartially and on a basis of need, in many areas of need, in many areas of rural Slovakia Jews are met with laughter when they ask for UN¬ RRA food, notwithstanding the fact that they are invariably the members ot a community most in need'', he reports, thus confirming an Independent Jew¬ ish Press Service dispatch ot some weeks ago.

Local Servicemen To Be Honored By B'nai B'rith Tuesday
More than 125 personal invi¬ tations have been issued to hon¬ orably discharged Jewish ser¬ vicemen in Columbus and vicin¬ ity to attend a reception by the ' entire community at the Broad Street Temple, next Tuesday, 8 P. M., sponsored by Zion Lodge, Bnal B'rith.
Memorial services and special prayers will be conducted by four of the leading Rabbis of Columbus, S. M. Gup, Mordecai Hirschsprung, Jacob Baker and Hyman Chanover.
Several returned servicemen will give first hand inpressions of their actual battle experien¬ ces.
The color guard of the Colum¬ bus Jewish War Veterans and Iheir bugler are to participate in the ceremonies.
The evening will be devoted entirely to the reception, every one is to be given an opportun¬ ity to meet the local men who have served during the war. AU Jewish servicemen, who are home on leave or close enough to attend, are Invited.
The Columbus B'nai B'rith Women will help serve the re¬ freshments following the pro¬ gram- This is a community wide reception and everyone is invited to join In the celebration.
