Prior to adoption of the budget by the JDC National Committee and the 2,000 delegates from all over the coun- ti^, the gathering heard heart-rending reports on the con¬ dition of European Jewry by Dr. Joseph Schwartz, chair¬ man of the European Council of the J.D. C, by Rabbi Judah Nadich, chief Jewish chaplaiin in the European theatre of operation and former special adviser to Gen¬ eral Eisenhower, and by Edward M. M. Warburg, newly elected chairman of the J.D/C. 1946 A Crucial Year for Jews in Europe Dr. Schwartz, who arrived here by plane on the eve of the conference after a study of Jewish problems in Europe, said the plight of the Jewish survivors in Europe was a desperate one, particularly in Poland where, he stressed, "the Jewish population is sitting on valises, waiting to leave a situation that has become hateful to them." Denouncing the situation in Poland, he said that the Jews "don't want to be rehabilitated in Poland, and the overwhelming majority want to go to Palestine." He said "the attitude expressed in Poland about the Jew is, 'What, is he still alive'?" and that "the Polish- people, as distinguished from the Polish Government, is disappoint¬ ed that there are still .80,000 Jews left in Poland." Calling Poland "the grave-yard of Europe," Dr. Schwartz bluntly accused the Polish people of being dis¬ appointed that the .Germans did not settle the "Jewish problem" for them. He said there was a wave of terror¬ ism now going on to drive the .lews out of Poland com¬ pletely, that many of the Jews in Poland are -keeping their assumed Aryan names in order to find jobs, Ihift "Jews are receiving threatening letters warning them to get out," that the Jews are victims of banditi-y and looting designed to make the country hot for them. "Every once in a while a Jew is murdered," he said, "and nobody seems-, to know the reason," adding that "every time it happens,, hundreds more Jews start walking." At the same time he reported that in almost every Poli.sh city and town, even those that escaped devestation at the hands of the Germ¬ ans, the Jewish quarter was the only part burned down.. Cracow, he added, was the only Polish city where a pre¬ war Jewish- synagogue I'emained. Dr. Schwartz stressed that the Polish Government itself was not anti-Semitic and that it was doing all it could to help the Jews, but that thfe Government was afraid to take a strong stand for fear that such action would be resented by the Po.l^s in general.
