MrsSf-"'"""" ^^ CHRONICLE llWJ/ Serving Columbus and Central Ohio Jewish Community'^/^^^ Vol, 2i>, No. 48 COLUMBUS, OHIO, FRIDAY, DBCBMBEH 12, 1947 Devoted to American and Jewish Ideals Plain Talk A MATTER OF SELF RESPECT BY AL SEGAL With no dinparnf^ninent of OhriHtiiia.s, which In n very Rood holiday, t<M>, I Nhoiild like <n point out the nierlt.s of Clinnukiih. Christmas has been Impinging all around us for a month al¬ ready, and only a most Impervious and protected .lewiah child can remain unaffected by its gentle implication. Christmas in all the shop windows! Chrlstmasy pieces in the newspapers! "White Chrisfmas" on the radio practically every night! If I had control over my grandchildren—(and what grandfather has much, if any¬ thing, to aay in the management of his grandchildren?)—I wouldn't warn them against the influence of Christmas or otherwise try to soque.ster them from this annual folkway. After all, it's good for all children to know one of the social decencies, even if it comes only once a year and even if it is special to one of the religions. And it's good toward Jhe brother¬ hood for children to know something of the religion of their neigh- . bors. 1, myself, am not unaffected by the significance of the season. With not the least effort of religious con.science 1 ex¬ change the appropriate greeting and, in fact, wish my neighbors a good Christmas all the year 'round—from Dec. 2.") to Dec. 25, that is. By that I subtly imjily my hope that they will keep every day in the year the charitable impulses that move them at this season. Yet 1 feci griped to hear of .Tc^vish families that make much of Olirlstuias and nothing at all of Clianukiih. It's all right to share with the iidghbors their celebration of good will on earth and the hope of pejicc, but there's .something'lacking of self-re¬ spect In those who do not appreciate their oivn lovely Kplrltuiil treasures. However rich tlujir houses may be, they are the piti¬ fully i»oor of spirit, the poor whose empty souls can find no food except cninibs they gather from their neighbor's adundnnce. British Forces Withdraw from Tel Aviv; MobiHzation Call Issued by Haganah! BV BEUIy CORALNIK (.ITA Correspondent) .IKKUSALBM, Dec. 12 — All British police units will be with¬ drawn from Tel Aviv Dec. 15 and ¦Jewish police will take over re¬ sponsibility for the maintenance of order in an area containing nearly half the .lews in Pales, ine, it was officially announced this week. Meanwhile, the .sound of gun¬ fire has been lieard almost con¬ tinuously in the Tel Aviv-.laffa area for several day.s. On one lowed on the heels of charges day alone 11 .lews, two Britons, I l)y the Haganah Ihat at least and three Arabs were killed. two of its men were killed by The area in which .Jewish po- British police while they were defending Jewish positions on lice will" take over next IVIon day includes Tel Aviv and its suhurlis, bounded by the towns of I'etach Tlkvah, Ramatb Can and Bnei Brak. No mention was made of the evacuation of Brit¬ ish troops, many of whom have lieen stationed in the battle area between Tel Aviv ;uid .Jaffa. The official announcement fol- A few years ago I discovered one ot these poor. I was attend¬ ing a party at which a Jewish lady of means and considerable local prominence also was a guest. After the cocktails had circulated awhile, she addressed herself to a certain gentleman (not Jewish) whose historic fam¬ ily connection dated back to the Mayflower beginnings of the na¬ tion. "How I envy you, Mr.—," she exclaimed., "What for?" " "your backgi-ound, Mr.—! Your history! You family's prominence in big affairs through so many years! Your important name! There's so much in having back¬ ground." Another sip at his martini seemed to fortify the embarras¬ sed gentleman enough to give her a devastating reply. "Mrs.-," he replied, "may I tell you how much I envy your own deep, im mense background; your great history! The courage ot your peo¬ ple's religious convictions that has kept them alive for 2,000 years! "your prophets! Your Old Testament: Mrs.—, you have a much deeper background than mine." The lady let out her confusion in deep blushes. She managed finally: "Thanks, Mr.—. I hadn't thought of that." Her self-respect seefned for the moment replen¬ ished. It seems to me that to make much of Chrlstma.4 and pot to appreciate Chanukah is to con¬ fess the spiritual ijoverty ot this lady. Goodness gracious, Chanu¬ kah commemorates a hero story much more significant than "The Lone Ranger" which we let our kids listen to every evening; as big in universal history as the American struggle for liberty on account of which many ladles and gentlemen are proud to be known as Sons and Daughters of the American Revolution; as be¬ autiful as any of the moral vic¬ tories in which men laid down , their lives -for ideals. What a proud occasion can be mode of this during the elgbt days of Cbanukoli in Jewish homes-'an occasion With all the pride that the Sons of the American Revolution feol every Feb. 22, when. In tjills and white ties, they assemble at dinner to celebrate CTeorge Washington and all their other heroic fore¬ fathers. Yes, we were the first to put in writing the idea of religious liberty—one of the Four FVeed- oms—and our forefathers wrote it with their blood. Their pride in this caused them to ordain their descendants that the Chan¬ ukah lights were so' to be placed that they would be visible from thi?. outside, that the passerby would know their pride. The passerby might say: "This is the home of a Jew. He is celebrating with lights a victory of his spir¬ it. It happened long ago that he won a victory for religious lib¬ erty but the man keeps on cele¬ brating it even to this night." And what if the passerby doesn't understand the meaning of the candle light.'! in the win dow? Maybe he will say: "This is the home of a Jew and what tor is he burning candle lights on his window sill? You just can't understand the Jews." That would be all right,, too. For the fort^a,thors It ^vns enough that the candles burned for the sJike of one's self-respect, They were the projection of one's Inner light and to have Inner light is enoui^i even If. the jms- serby didn't tlnderstJlnd, Dr. Gordon Receives Tribute From Schonthal Center Board; Rudy Klemperer is Re-elected A fitting tribute to a fine man was made last week.
