Banquet Honoring Rabbi Zelizer And Veterans At Broad Street Temple Thursday Evening
It is with deep regret that we announce the passing Thursday at the Jewish Hospit¬ al of Louis Katz, 3459 Wilson Ave,, Cincinnati, O. He was the father'of Sidney L. Katz, presi¬ dent of Zion Lodge, B'nai B'rith, The deceased is survived by hts wife, Sadye Katz and a-daughter, Mrs. Samuel B. Einhom, of Cin¬ cinnati. Details of funeral ser¬ vices were not revealed at press time.
The War Service Committee of the Broad Street Temple will culminate its five years of ac¬ tivities with an elaborate ban¬ quet to be sponsored by the en¬ tire congregaMon next Thurs¬ day,-Way 18, 0:30 p. m., in the Social Hall of the Temple. At this function the congregation win pay tribute to its men and women who are now veterans of World War II and Rabbl Na¬ than Zelizer who just returned after twenty five month's of ser¬ vice as Chaplain in the Army, here apd in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre.
Judging from the enthusiasm evidenced by the membership of the congregation in their earnest desire to turn out and pay tribute to the men and women who served their coun¬ try in all parts of the world and under all conditions, the affair promises to be among the out¬ standing functions In the com¬ munity. All efforts are being di¬ rected toward making this ban¬ quet one which will linger long in the memories of those who attend and participate In hon¬ oring our veterans.

Simon Lazarus, president of thie United Jewish Fund of Columbus, has this week announced that I. W. Garek, veteran campaign organizer and civic leader, has been named general chairman of the 1946 unprecedented, emer¬ gency, Life Saving Drive. Mr. Garek was the unanimous choice for this community responsibility, one who possessed vigorous, energetic and experienced campaign leadership. His acceptance of the task was hailed by Robert W. Schlff, the successful chairman of the annual effort during the past seven years, as well as those who have worked with him in past campaigns.
Mr. Garek needs little introduction to Columbus Jew¬ ish community. As an able lawyer and B'nai B'rith leader he has been a pillar of strength in the local Jewish com¬ munity. Every worthwhile Civic endeavour has received Mr. Garek's wholehearted support, always ready to give of himself for the enrichment of Jewish life and Jewish values.
A Real Challenge
Jewish homelessness and suf¬ fering in Europe have reached such disastijous proportions that only an unparalleled relief, re¬ habilitation and reconstruction program can stave oft further mass deaths among the 1,400,(X)0 Jewish survivors In Europe, Mr. Garek declared yesterday on the occasion of his election as Chairman of the United Jewish Fund drive in support ot the national United Jewish Appeal campaign tor $100,000,000.
"Jewish suffering on three continents is today so va.st, so profound, so universal that one is virtually at a loss to encom¬ pass its .scope," Mr. Garek said. Stre.s.sing that Amercian Jewry dare nut sidestep the challenge ot destiny to reliulld the rem¬ nants ot the Jewish people in Europe, he emphasized:
"The statistics of murder, of extermination, of extinction by disease, hunger and the bayonet must now give w.ay to the sta. tistics of mercy. We mourn the (1,000,000 Jews who died horrible deaths at the hands ot the Nazis. We now dedicate ourselves to re.scuing those who survived."

Election of officers and exec¬ utive board members of the Zionist Organization ot Colum¬ bus will take place next Tues¬ day, May Mth, at 8 P. M., at the  East  Broad  St.  Temple.
The speaker on the occasion will be Rabbl F. A. Doppelt, ot Fort Wayne, Indiana, who will analyze the Anglo-Ameri¬ can Commission's report on Palestine.
Rabbi Doppelt is an author and lecturer ot wide scope. He has written extensively on the subject of Cha.ssidic lore and legend. He has also written on other subjects pertaining to Jew i.sh lite and thought. One col¬ lection of his writings consists of studies of the status of the Jew on the eve ot World War II. These studies originally ap¬ peared In the Jewish Layman serially, and are now. compiled Jnto a volume entitled: "On The Eve Ot Chaos." Another volume of his prayer Is; "Dialogue With God Or Why We Pray!" Habbi Doppelt is very active in Zionism. He has lectured on various aspects of the Zionist movement throughout the coun¬ try, and last year he toured Ohio and Pennsylvania under the auspices of the American Lecture Bureau, where he ad¬ dressed large gatherings of Ha¬ dassah and Zionist organiza¬ tions.
