At A Dinner Tuesday Evening at Winding Hollow Simon Lazarus, president of the United Jewish Fund of Columhus, who this year more so than ever before, has joined the ranks of the army of workers in making per¬ sonal solicitations for a humanitarian campaign which has no equal in Jewish history—one dedicated to the rescue of 1,500,000 who survived the Nazi program of annihila¬ tion, this week issued the following statement:— "The United Jewish Fund Campaign is just around Ihe corner. Thousands of people in Europe and through¬ out the world look to Columbus Jewry and the Jewry of the United States for the means of rescue.. Saved from the machinations of the Hitlerian regime, these survivors of hale and violence are once again resuming the normal course of their existence. I. W. Garek is heading the United Jewish Fund Cam¬ paign for 1940. . His humanitarian regard for his fellow men would not permit him to take the easier course. He is driving his captains and the many workers who will take the field, as well as himself, to an all-out effort which will spell victory—a victory for those who believe in Co¬ lumbus' ability to raise the necessary sum, and a victory for those who look to us. The Columbus community will not let Campaign Chairman Garek down. It has given generously before and will give more generously this year of crisis. A rec¬ ord quota is to be raised here, and it is expected that each and every donor, and the new donors, will do their utmost to make this possible for relief and rehabilitation, for maintenance of our national and educational organizations, for our civic protective agencies and other institutions. You have given generously before—give more gener¬ ously this year. Look into your innermost heart. Be thankful for your lot, your > ability to give—then give, at least double what you gave the last year." Moving with characteristic apeod and dispatch. Chairman Garek said this week that judg¬ ing from advanced solicitations to date he was confident that the community's respon,se to tiie greatest emergency of- all time will more than meet this year's Columbus quota. During 'he past four weeks prelirninury meetings have been held t)y leaders of the campaign and everything is in readiness for city-wide coverage. While the drive does not officially open until next "Tuesday evening's dinner at the Winding Hollow Country Club, the Campaign Committee has already met with generous contributions and every indication points to j)ne of the most successful cam¬ paigns held in this, or any other community In the country. The amount to be raised this year is a far-cry from the sums raised In all previous efforts, stated Mr. Garek, and while it is true that the r%st of the coun¬ try has answered the call ot the United Jewish Appeal for $100,- 000,000, he pointed out that Co¬ lumbus has made outstanding strides which to his point of view indicates a genuine com¬ munity responsibility by the rank and file of local Jewry.
