Community A sited To Raise The Largest
Quota In Local History For Saving And
Rebuilding Lives Of European Jewry
Simon Lazarus, president of The United Jewish Fund of Columbus, has this week announced that Harry Roth, 154 S. Ardmore Road, will head this year's drive as General Chairman. Mr. Roth has proven a most efficient and ex¬ perienced campaigner whose past performance in previous campaigns more than qualifies him. for this important task. With the biggest job confronting the Jewish community, we believe that we arc indeed fortunate in marshalling such capable campaign leadership, Mr. Lazarus concluded.
Columbus Jewi"y must raise — $725,000 as It.i 1!)-17 United Jewish Fund Campaign goal if cata.s- Irophe is to be averted among the survivors in Europe and if we are to continue uninterrup¬ ted support for local, national and other overseas educational, health, welfare and relief agen¬ cies.
The Columbus Campaign Com¬ mittee, which includes leaders and large contributors adopted this goal after hearing an anal¬ ysis of overseas, national and local' needs at a meeting held last Monday evening at the Southern Hotel from Henry Morgenthau, Jr., former U. S. Secretary of the Treasury. Mr. Morgenthau Is General Chair¬ man ot the United Jewish Ap¬ peal for Refugees, Overseas Needs and Palestine.
Up To Conscloncfes
Emphasizing that though the war is over, atrocities continue, Morgenthau declared that the Jews of America . cannot rest while the responsibilities of the lives of European survivors 'are entirely on our shoulders."
"I cannot say what Columbus should give In 1947", he added, "but the deqisldn must be made between Columbus Jews and their consciences. I can only tell you that $170,000,000 is the minimum for Europe, for Pal¬ estine and new Americans. The money spent last year was spent wisely and was stretched to the limit, but after studying the
needs, 1 have .satisfied myself that $200,000,000 would have come closer to doing the job."
Roth'H, Stfitomont
In accepting the appointment,. Mr. Roth, stated this week: "It has again become my privilege to serve at a time when Colum¬ bus Jewry is faced with the tre¬ mendous ta.sk of attaining its unprecedented goal of $'725,000 to aid in rehabilltaUng and re¬ constructing 1,500,000 lives in Europe.
"Last year we achieved the goal set for us by diligent worlc and tireless effort. This year it becomes even more Imperative that those conscientious and generous workers who shared In our previous campaigns again contribute their time and ener¬ gies and moneyto achieving and putting over the 1947 goal,"
"After reading the reports of other communities throughout the country and thrilling to their successful experiences, I feel certain that with the co-- operatlon and generosity found among our citizens in Columbus, we will this year achieve our share of the nationwide $170,000,- 000 United Jewish Appeal cam¬ paign. Giving In 1947 must be on a sacrificial basis," Mr. Roth stated.
Chairmen of the ,other divis¬ ions and plans for their affairs will be announced in later Is¬ sues of the Chronicle.
