WARSAW (WNS) —Jews In Poland have become panic- stricken as a result of the pog¬ rom which took place In Kielce last week and thousands of them are now fleeing the count¬ ry in a westward and southward direction. Most of them are hop¬ ing to reach the American oc¬ cupied zone in Germany. Others are fleeing to Czechoslovakia, while In Danzig man,y Jews are trying to obtain .ships to carry them to Sweden and other Scan¬ dinavian countries. The feeling among the surviving Polish Jews today is that while the Government is a liberal one and is pro-.lewlah, it is powerless to withstand the active hostil¬ ity and hooliganism which a large part of the Polish popula¬ tion is displaying towards the Jews. The Government itself is encouraging Jewish emigration. In the meantime. Premier Os- ubka-Morawski and other high officials of the Polish Govern¬ ment have promised swift just¬ ice for these responsible for the Kielce pogrom, which has al¬ ready resulted in the death of 41 Jews and the wounding of 80 others. Trials of the pogrom perpetrators began on Monday and the Government has prom¬ ised to Invoke the death penalty HPon all those who will be found gulHy. ' Among those who ha'^e beeij arrested In connection with the pogrom is the Assistant Com¬ mander of the Kielce militia, ac¬ cording to an announcement by the Ministry of Public Security, It is claimed that the militia failed to protect the Jews dur¬ ing the riots. 6.1 Persons Arrested Up to now 63 persons have been arrested for participating In the riots and arrests are con¬ tinuing. Units of the mllita are patrolling the Jewish sections of Kielce to prevent repetition of last week's attacks, which saw Jews assaulted on the streets, in their homes. In rail¬ way coaches and street cars and in the headquarters of the Jew¬ ish comniunlty. Virtually the en¬ tire Jewish population of Kielce, which now numt>ers only about 120, were victims of the pogrom. According to a Government spokesman, the persons respon¬ sible for the Kielce pogrom were members of the NSZ, anti-Gov¬ ernment Fascist band, which is beiieveti to be behind most of the anti-Semitic outbreaks which have occured in the past year. The immediate cau.se of the out¬ break was a rumor that Jews were kidnapping non-Jewish children. A Polish boy who was detained overnight by a Christ¬ ian Pole was instructed by the latter lo inform his parents that he had been held by Jews. When the boy told his story, angry crowds gathered before a n apartment house in which Jews live, and shouting "Long Live General Anders", attempted, tp break In, They -were finally dis¬ persed by police and trot>pB, many of whom were killed. A one-hour country-w 1 d e strike, originally called to pro¬ test the British attacks on tiA Jews of Palestine, developed last Frjday into a mass protest against the Kielce events and the continued attacks on Jews throughout Poland.
