(i*holo, courtCHy Ohio Htal<> .loiiriial.) The Sanford I. Lakin award for oxitstanding community ser¬ vice was pre.sented to Rabbi Harry Kaplan Sunday, Sept. 2r>, at Broad St. Temple. The pre^ sentation was made by Walter Kalz, chairman of the commit¬ tee for the award during the annual B'nai B'rith installation dinner. The presenlalion of the .Lakin award i.s a yearly event with Zlon Lodge (i2, and is a perman¬ ent memorial to Sanford 1. La¬ kln, one of the first of our com¬ munity to give his life in World War 11. An ardent Ben Brith . and past president of . Zlon Lodge, Mr. Lakin also was an ac¬ tive worker in many Jewish and non-Jewi.sh communal affairs, including United .lewLsh Fund, Hlllel Foundation, Schonthal Center, Community Chest and Red Cross. He was Past Presi¬ dent of the Columbus .lunior Chamber of Commerce, and prior to his enlistment, served ba\the Franklin County Draft DSdrd. It was suggested by many members that a memorial be established in- Sanford Lakin's memory, and in March 1946, President Sidney L. Katz ap¬ pointed a committee to discuss the nature of this award. The committee recommended and the lodge approved that the a- ward should be in the fortti of an Illuminated scroll, and award¬ ed to a member of Zlon Lodge, with (tne or all of the following qualifications: 1. Distlngui.sJieiJ_4i{jd, outsland- ing service a.s an active member of the District ur Supreme Lodge. 2. Faithful, loyal and con¬ scientious service to Zion Lodge over a con.^ectitive period of 25 years or longer. .'1.
