He has been reported seen not only in the darker places of the world, such as Europe, but even in more enlightened spots such as the U. S. A. (Currently. I have had re¬ ports ot Haman being loud on the streets of London. He has been appearing in the guise of an Englishman named Moseiey.) My investigations into this phenomenon started one day (sometime before Purlm) when I called iri my head research man, the renowned Brurio Nlm- mergewesenwar, who was the professor of psychology at the University of Garnicht In Ger¬ many iri the time before Hitler. Dr. Nimmergewesenwar is the one who wrote the monumental work entitled "Die Bes.serung des Menschelt." which in its time was esteemed as the last word on how to improve the human race wholesale. It was said at first by the most authoritative German crit¬ ics that Dr. Nimmergewesen- war's book was a milestone of the science of psychology and, in fact, of the human race on ita difficult upward climb. It meant that mankind, If it follow¬ ed Dr. Nimmergewesenwar's footsteps, was but a short dis¬ tance from the mountalntop. But when Hitler came along many of tho snmo critics said that tlio doctor's work was an illH^nccaled Jewish plot to.weak¬ en Germany by tlie morality of the Jewish prophets. Dr. Nim- moi*gcwesenwar's tiicsis was but a thinly disguJNe<l, version of tllo Jowisli propiiots in a scion- tlfic_HTnppcr. Tho innnifnst destiny of Germany, thoy said, would bo subverted by h'is suli- tlo Jewisii morality wiiich was ill Dr. Ninimergowosenwar's book. Tho German volk would be woal{oned unto ultimate de¬ feat by tho onfoebling ethics of lho doctor's book. It was one of the books burn¬ ed in the big Nazi bonfires. The great and good doctor managed to get out of Germany a few steps ahead of the Gestapo. Thus he finally came to me in my re¬ search department. I could welcome a scientist who in his work emphasized the, ethical content of his Jewish be¬ ing. I had become quite fed up on Jews who made Jewish na¬ tionalism the main badge of be¬ ing a Jew. Dr. Nimmergewesen¬ war was a man after my own heart, who even in his science brought the moral lights of Tor- ah and prophets. The doctor was a man. Ever since then he had been at my right hand whenever I go to my typewriter to write on the mat¬ ter of being a Jew and what It means. So when I thought of looking into the further history of Ha¬ man (whose reported hanging is being observed this week) I called In Dr. Nimmergewesen¬ war for consultation. "Doctor," I said, "we're going to look into the amazing fact that Haman still Is alive and vigorous, though we have the written report that he was hanged.
