Charges Against Harvard Re¬ newed With Publication of Excerpts From New Blank
MUCH FEELING AROUSED TO BOYCOTT UNIVERSITY
GALICIAN JEWS
SEEK AUTONOMY
(Special to Omo Jkwisu Chronicle) NEW YORK (J. C. B.)—Charges that Harvard University was seeking to discriminate against Jewish students have been renewed with the publication of excerpts from the new blank form which applicants for admission arc rc- <iuired to fill out, says a Boston dis- i patch to the Times tod.iy.
The blank required considerable per¬ sonal information and particular feeling seems to have been aroused by a ques¬ tion as to "race and color?" Another question is, "What change, if any, has been made since birth in your own name or that of your father? Of the eight .other questions some seek to.elicit in¬ formation as lo the birthplace of the student's father, why the applicant wishes to study at Harvard, to what school organizations he belongs, what are his chief interests and what are his favorite sports or games.
Although ' spokesmen for the uni- vcrsity explain that applicants would •not be rejected because of failure to answer - the questions regarding race and color and name, and that they do iiot prejudice the work of the commit¬ tee appointed last spring to investigate the question of admission to Harvard, some Jewish students, and graduates eontend that the new questions are di¬ rected against Jewish students.
Talk of Boycott
So mush feeling has becij aroused by
the questions that' some of the extreme
elements are agitating for a boycott
against the university on the ground
that there is so much race prejudice at
•Harvard that no other course is open.
One Jew was quoted today as calling
, the university an-"intellectual'.Ku'Klux
/;Kfah,"'"' -'.-¦'.;. ¦-'-'-'; "''''.'" >¦ " :¦
Harvard 'Corporation, said there were no means available of determining the exact proportion of Jewish students in Harvard, as students had not been en¬ rolled according to race' or nationality. "Unofficially," he said, "it is estimated that last year 15 to 20 percent of the 27,000 students enrolled were Jews."
LEMBERG (J, C. B.) The Polish Government having an¬ nounced its intention to confer a measure of autonomy upon the residents of Eastern Gali cici, Jewish representatives de-. cided to demand the right to administer thoir "cultural and national affairs", including the right to take a census. The demand is based on tho claim that the Jews rank numerically third in the list of minority nationalities in Galicia.

NEW YORK—The sum of $10,750,- 200 has been appropriated for relief work in the war stricken countries pf Europe by the Joint Distribution Com¬ mittee since Jan. 1. Of this sum $1,180,000 has been allotted to the American Relief Administration -with which the Joint distribution Cpmmittee is co-operating in Russia and the Ukraine. Other sums appropriat<:d for R.issian work brings the total for that country up to, $5,322,000. The bulk of this sum is being spent for the mainte¬ nance of feeding stations on a non-sec¬ tarian basis.
Fgr Poland $1,035,000' has been ap¬ propriated, mainly for medical relief and for reconstruction by way of loans to credit-unions to enable individual borrowers" to resume their pre-war V'O- cations, the rebuilding of homes and the equipment of trade schools. Austria, $117,000; Czccho-Slovakia, .$103,000; Latvia, $170,000; Lithuania, $229,000, and Turkey, $107,500. A curious item is an appropriation of $7,500 for cultural relief for the "black Jews" of Abyssinia.
Recent Remittances
Recent remittances from various cam¬ paign committees on account of pledges during the $14,000,000 campaign include the following-, among others:
Sunday evening, October ist, irift, tiguratc.s with great solemnity the Day of Atonement, or Yom Kippufi' tlu; holiest day of the Synagog. On that evening and again on Mondiy, from morning till eventide, the Jewish people will foregather for ^'orsliip in their several synagogs in all parts of the world. Those retiovcd from their families will en¬ deavor to be among the family circle,pn this solemn occasion. Soldiers and sailors of Jewish faith are granjed fuilcdighs in order lo observe appropriately this holiday. WhereV^* the Jewish people happen to be^ whether fevv or many,,they will ceasii from worldly concerns and give themselves wholly lo thoiiglits of repentance.
More than any other holiday of ,|he Synagog, Yom Kippur revives the confidence of the Jew in the itlt|male triumph of God's love and justice. However sadly he has fari^d, despite misfortune and untold affliction, he repair^ to his synagog 6n the Day of Atonement hopeful of God's way and trusting that iiir- the later days none of earth's children shall hurt nor destroy in all'illis mountain, for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord, as the waters cover the sea.
The outward form of observance practiced by the Jewish people on this day is abstention from, foda and drink. The intent of this ceremoney is to afflict the soul, in oirder that the worshipper be belter disciplined lo exercise self-control -and direct his actions for th^ up¬ building and betterment of humanit};.
The Day of Atonement can be-iraced back to ancient days and in the long career pf the Jewish people it has undergone many trans¬ formations. ' - 'j
When it is first noted in the Mosaic Code it is a day when the high priest in the Temple expiated the <sins of tlie people. The mass' of the people were to observe the day Ifroni evening to evening as a Sab¬ bath, and a fast day to obtain paj^don for their sins. In Leviticus i6:2-34 the elaborate priestly ritual jpf "Making atonement for the holy place and because of the uncleann^sscs of the children of Israel and because of their transgressions, even all their sins" is described. The high priest was the centraL^gure o the ritual. He sought forgiveness for his own sins and those of his hqusehold and then for all the people. A very primitive rite which was re 'ived for use on the Day of Atone¬ ment of this very ancient period ^ias the selection of two goats, one of which was to be sent to AzazeM.|ii<; demon of the wilderness, to bear away the sins-of the, peopIe, .while tbe other was to be offered to the Lord as a sacrifice.'-,•

Mr, Ford said he is not an enemy of thfe Jewish people although the average Jew does not be¬ lieve it. He wants every Jew to become an American in heart and leave inter¬ nationalism alone.
"Internationalism," Mr. Ford contin¬ ued, "i's a break-down to all loyalty and the Jew is a victim to it." He is rpady to help the Jews and is trying to do it through his Dearborn.Independent.
"I have received letters from hundreds of Jews thanking me for opening their eyes," .Ford asserted, insisting that the "International Jew Banker" is the enemy of all humanity. He thinks Canada will, in a few years, have the same prob¬ lem to face as America. '

The American Minister's Speech in Sultanabad —Transla¬ tion From The Daily Setareh Iran (The Star of Persia), Sunday, June 4, 1922
Columbus Jewry has been called upon to contribute its share towards one of the greatest movements in the history of our country. It is the AiUi-Defama- tioii movement of the Independent Order of the B'nai B'rith which has entered the War of Civilization to save the future of the Jew in America. To accomplish this end, the Anti-Defama¬ tion League has inaugurated a campaign for the raising of $250,000 throughout tjie United States so as to enable it to carry out an extensive and intensive educational, campaign for the next four or 'five ycar.s.
"There is no doubt that greater ef¬ forts than heretofore will have to be exerted to secure justice to the Jew, because never have there been such or- ganjzed and such bitter attacks leveled against him as during the past two years," said Mr. E. J. Schanfarber, chairman of the local campaign com¬ mittee, at a -recent meeting of the B'nai B-'rith.
"And every indication points to the fact that - .tligs^^" attacks will continue, js ^ 'I'o coniGat tliem'iiu'd^o^'ptafee^litf'T'iwTTl!^: before the world in his proper light, funds will be necessary. The public will have lo be educated. Lecturers
(Special to Omo Jiivvisn Chronicle) NEW YORK (J. C. B. by mail)—In reporting to Herbert Hoover, chairman of the American Relief Administration, on the progress of the famine relief work in the Ukraine up to July 31, Colonel William R Grove, American Relief Administrative District super¬ visor, makes plain that much of the credit for checking the famine in that region belongs to the Jewish Joint Dis¬ tribution Committee, who financed the operation, says an Ameritau Relief Ad¬ ministration release today.
After reciting the desperate conditions existing in the Ukraine as revealed in the report of Dr. Lincoln Hutchinson who declared "that over a considerable area conditions were as serious as in any part of the Volga basin and in one respect the famine area of the Ukraine is in a more serious condition than the Volga in that the drought followed four or five years of wans, insurrections, pogroms, bandit raids and other dis¬ turbances, far more serious than hap¬ pened on tlie Volga," ' Colonel Grove frankly admits that it was not thought that any considerable amount of money would be available for the relief of these conditions.

NEW YORK, (J. C. B.)—In keeping with his custom inaugurated during his last visit to the Holy land, Nathan Straus, veteran New York philan¬ thropist, sent another contribution of 11,000 for an Arab orphanage in the Jaffa district, Palestine. This install ment was handed to Dr. David de Sola Pool, Rabbi of Shearith Israel, on Cen¬ tral Park West, for transmission to the Zionist Commission in Jerusalem which will hand over the money to the Arabs in charge of the orphanage.

INTERESTING PROGRAM
BY HEBREW SCHOOL
A most interesting program was that given by the children of the Columbus Hebrew School on Thursday, Sept. 21st, at the Livingston Ave. School. Mr. Savage, principal of the school spoke on the "Significance of Rosh Hashonah" and the bearing it will have on the ac¬ complishments of the student body of the Hebrew School in the coming year thru the acquisition of a modern build¬ ing of their own which is now under construction. The school choir ren¬ dered Hebrew songs throughout the en¬ tire program, which were well received by the large audience in attendance.
The following pupils took part in the program;
Augusta Robbins, Martin Steinberg, Ida Garelick, Tevian Finkelstein and Sarah Haas. The Thall sisteA, Evelyn and Mardelle, rendered some beautiful song selections with interpretive dances. The program was concluded with the singing of America and the Hebrew Na¬ tional Hymn, "Hatikvah".
SULTAN RAD—Upon an invitation c.rtendcd to His Excellency Dr. Korn¬ feld, the American Minister, by the American business men of Sultanabad to address the bu-iiness men of that citx in connection with the ways and mean^ of improving and developing the Present business condition of Persia, the, Miv- istcr, accompanied by Mr. Bernard Gotlieb, ihe American Consul lU Teheran, and Mr. Allah Yar .Khan Salrh, First Munsjii of the American Legation, arrived in Sultanabad on the morning of Wednesday, May 24.,
With the above object in vieio, Mr. Charles A. Jefferson, General Manager of H. S. Tavshanjian, Inc., an Ameri¬ can concern of New 'York, prepared a gorgeous feast in his house on the eve- nind of Friday, May 26. " The Governor and' the chiefs of the various Govern¬ ment departments were invited to din¬ ner, and the merchants to attend the feast at ten o'clock. The house was very beautifully decorated with the best carpets and riigs of Sultanabad, atui the Persian flag of the Lion and the Sun, as well as two flags of the United States, draped the Minister's table, giv¬ ing a wonderful effect to the scene.
At ten o'clock, when an audience of about tu'o hundred persons ivere pres¬ ent, Mr. Jefferson arose and introduced the Minister in the foltovring words:
"Gentlemen: It is a great honor and pleasure for me to introduce to you this evening His Excellency Dr. Kornfeld, the American Minister. His Excellency is the first foreign Minister in the his¬ tory of Persia ta address a body of Persian business men. Dr. Kornfeld is not only a diplomat who has been an important factor in the political life of his country, but he is a man of vast knowledge of business and the affairs connected tvith it. Moreover, he has a heart that is full of humanitarian senti¬ ments and philanthropic ideals, and it is for this reason that His E.vcellency has consented to address us this eve¬ ning regarding the means of improving our present business condition.
I consider it a great honor, as well as a pleasure, to present to you the Atnerican Minister, His Excellency Dr. Joseph S. Kornfeld."
The Minister then arose and after thanking Mr.Jefferson for his kind in¬ troduction; and the audience for their
presence, he made a very eloquent speech, a •summary of which foUoias:
Dr. Komfeld's Remarks
"Before leaving America for my post, I was asked by my friends: 'In what language are you going to speak to the Persians?' I replied: 'In the language of the heart.' - That may not be the language of diplomacy, but it is the one language understood by all of God's children. ' I shall not only speak to yo\i in the language of the heart but I shall also tell you what is in my heart, namely, the welfare of Persia.
"That being my object, you need have no apprehension le'st I discuss politics. I sincerely believe that this country is suffering from too much politics. In Persia everybody is talking politics be¬ cause there is nothing else to talk about. So just for a change, I have decided to talk about business.
"What is the matter with Persia? 'Why is it that this nation, once the foremost of antiquity, has become one of the lowliest of modern times? Surely nature has fa-yored her as she has favored few other lands. And as for her people, they are just as in¬ telligent as any other people. Why thei^ does she lie prostrate awaiting the help of some good Samaritan?
"I' cannot be too positive in my as¬ sertion - that Persia's backwardness is not due to climate, race or religion. There are countries in South Africa in all respects similar to Persia, which within recent years have attained a very high degree of progress an^ prosperity. Even in the very heart of Africa there are thousands of miles of the best metalled roads and hundreds of miles of railway, whereas Persia, one of the most ancient highways, has practically none of these means of communication. How then account for Persia's par¬ alysis? To my mind, the only thing that will account for it is her lack of business. Business makes ail the dif¬ ference in the world. Take America, her soil nqt richer than yours, and her people not better than yours, and yet note her great pre-eminence, due en¬ tirely to business. To speak of London and Teheran in the same breath almost appears ridiculous, does it not? And yet let me tell you that 300 years ago London was not much better than (Concluded on page 4.)
will have to be sent into the schools and into the colleges. Libraries vvill have to be furnished literature concerning the Jew, his history, and his ideals. Every self-respecting Jew should con¬ tribute cheerfully to this fund, because the problem affects very vitally his se¬ curity and well-being."
The Columbus quota is $3500. Are you going to share this responsibility vvhich,is yours as welt as ours? Do you realize vvhat vve are facing today in the vvorld of Anti-Semitism?
We ask you, therefore, our dear friend and brother, that vvhh the holi¬ day of repentance - "Yom Kippur" at hand, vvill forgiveness be granted you by ignoring our appeal? We know that you' are wi.th us in this great cause, Then why delay your subscription?

SERVICES CONDUCTED
AT PENITENTIARY
,Joint Operation
"However," Colonel Grove's report continues, "an arrangement was made on March 9, 1922, for a joint operation by the American Relief Administration alid the ^e\vish Joint Distribution Com¬ mittee to provide sufficient food for a maximum.of 800,000 children and 400,- 000 adults—the maximum to be reached by July 15—the Joint Distribution Com¬ mittee, to finance the movement and the Ainerican Relief Administration to ad¬ minister it; the work at least in its initial 'stages, to be done as part of the' IML-jm.d_.tQL-^J>«.£lxifc}lv,,nQn- ^ sectarian in its administration."
In this conclusion Colonel Grove ' states:' "It is not believed that any deaths from starvation occurred in the Ukraine after July 15. If so, thcy vvere isolated cases where the starving were not .brought to the attention of any of our personnel. We had difficulty in some of the cities, even after we vvere feeding the full number of known starving people, - to .get at all of _ the casps.
Magnanimous Action "Since, it became widely known that the Joint Distribiition Committee financed the Ukrainian program on a non-sectarian basis," Colonel Grove writes, "much favorable comment has been received as to this humanitarian contribution, but it is too early to say what effect, if any, it vvill have on the relations heretofore existing between the Jews and Russians in certain sec¬ tions of the Ukraine. Like all similar movements, however, it must have a permanently beneficial effect in the minds of the large majority of people vvho are capable of .apreciating such magnanimous action." . '
New Year services at the penitentiary were conducted, as in the past years, by Rabbi I. B. Jashenosky, assisted by Jacob Myers. These two public spirited men need no flattering words of praise for their indispensable service they render all year to the city and state, but wc can voice the sentiment of the Jewish -population of this city in ex¬ tending to these two noble men our best wishes for the New Year; that God may grant them continued health and happiness to continue Iheir work in the uplift of our brethren.
Greatest appreciation is also hereby expressed to the Ezras Noshim Society under whose auspices the splendid New Year dinner was prepared and served to the inmates of the pen.
COUNCIL OF JEWISH WOMEN TO SERVE INMATES OF O. S. P.
APPEALS FOR HIAS .
ON "KOL NIDRE" NIGHT
On Yom Kippur, Monday, Oct. 2.id, at 4:00 o'clock p. m., the Council of Jewish Women will furnish a chicken dinner for the inmates bf the' Ohio State Penitentiary with Mrs. Isaac Rosenthal as chairman of the affair As true daughters of Israel, the Council is always ready to contribute its share towards every worthy cause. May the Council's New Year of activities be crowned with success, health and (lappi- iiess to all its members, is the sincere wish of all Columbus Jewrry.
NEW YORK The Hebrew
Sheltering and Immigrant Aid Society of America has sent a stirring appeal to the Rabbis, Presidents, Officers and nlem- bers. of Congregations asking that "HIAS". be permitted to make appeals in behalf of Jew¬ ish wanderers stranded in Eu¬ rope, on Kol Nidre night.
Unfortunately the Society has not addresses of all Ihe con¬ gregations in the United States and therefore direct appeals could be lent only to those con¬ gregations whose addresses the Society has. However, it is the duty of every congregation to respond to the call of our un¬ fortunate sisters and brethren who have been separated from their nearest and dearest by war and pogroms and make tho nec¬ essary arrangements so that HIAS can make an appeal in every Synagogue and Temple in the Unjlted States. Only in this way can the Society continue to carry on its stupendous work among the Jewish wanderers.
