Jo.seph Schonthal, of .sainted memory, had great visions of the Jewish Center Ideal many years 'ago. His gift of the Schonthal Center (on E. Rich St.) to the Jewish community was a con¬ crete example ot his future out¬ look on communal Jewish Insti¬ tutions which have a.s their aim tho moulding of character. "Pop" Schonthal—-as he was affectionately known to thous¬ ands in Columbus—was the grandfaiher of Joseph Summer, whose father, the late Samuel N. Other of¬ ficers elected f.or the ensuing year were: J. W. Stelnhauser, treasurer; Jack Schiff, assistant T r e a s; and I. W. G^rek, Allen Gunder¬ shelmer and Sam Shlnbach, vice presidents. In assuming the presidency of the United Jewish Fund, Mr. Lazarus, Who succeeds Rob't W. Schlff, said that he was deeply conscious, of the honor conferred upon him and also of the respon¬ sibility he had accepted. Mr. Lazarus recalled that over ttie years since the Inception of the United Jewish Fund in 1926, the Columbus community has earnad and won an enviable posi¬ tion in the American Jewish community as a unique com¬ munity ranking high nationally Ralph Lazarus at all times. In discharging its obligations to every worthwhile cause. He said that he considered It the i-esponsibillty of the Board of Directors of the United Jewish Fund and Its officers to: 1. Continue to provide our fair share to the international needs. 2. Adequately finance our lo¬ cal Institutions. - 3. Keep In mind, in conduct¬ ing campaigns to raise funds, that we are a unified community and wish to remain such. Aa his first official act as presi¬ dent, ilr. Lazarus' thanked the retiring president, R. W. Schlff, for the excellent leadership he had given the Fund during' the past year. He said that after carefully reviewing the results of the 19-19-1950 campaign, he felt that Columbus, under the presi¬ dency ot Mr. Schiff, and the icampalgn chalrmartship ot Mr. Leo '?assenoff, had done an out¬ standing job. The new pi sldent asked for a rising vote of thanks for Mr. S.chlft, Mr. Yassenoff and A the members of the campaign I committee who helped achieve / this tine result. It was the opinion ot the new ' president that leadership in the community needs to be develop¬ ed to establish a revolving set of officers and members ot the Board of the United Jewish Fund. Mr. Lazarus asked for and received permission of the Board to appoint at once, a campaign chairman tor the 1950-1951 cam¬ paign, following the appoint¬ ment ot a campaign committee, charged with the responsibility of developing a detailed plan for the conduct ot the .next cam¬ paign, which would be presented to the Board ot Directors at Its next meeting.
