Dr. Bnnjamin Gertner, 2 5 95 Powell Ave., was elected State Commandor of Ohio's Jewlah War Veterans organization at the an¬ nual encampment held . at the Deshler Hilton Hotel here last week-end.
Dr. Gertner Is a member ot Agu¬ das Achini Congregation's board of trustees nnd Brotherhood, member of American Legion (Bexley post), member of the Jewish Community Council and Community Relations Committee, past vice-chairman of the United JeWlsh Fund, active In Red Crosa blood donor campaigns, member of the National Security Committee for "Military Reserve Week" and paat Commander of Capltol Post 122, JWV of Colum¬ bus.
Mrs. Rebecca AuerUttch of Akron was named State Preaident of the I^adies Auxiliary.
Some 300 delegates attended the two-day encampment. Reuben Kamlnsky, National Com¬ mander, made the keynote address and issued a plea for aid to Israel so she could buy arms for defense against Communist infiltration in the Middle Qa^t.
At the convention's annual din¬ ner, Kamlnsky stressed that "Is¬ rael is the flrat line of defense in tho Middle East against Com- muniora." On the White Citizen Council in the South. Kamlnsky called it "a severe threat to the fundamental precepts of demo¬ cracy."
Other new JVW offlcera Include: Dr. Seymour Feuer of Youngstown, Senior vlco-Commander; Bernard Direnfeld ot Cleveland, Junior vicerCommander; Meyer Mlnkln of Akron, Inspector General; Norman Spltzcn of Cleveland, Deputy In¬ spector General.
The State body will hold Its 1987 convention In Youngstown.

$77,000 to UJA
Aaron Zacks, 1956 Special Gifts chairman of the United Jewish Fund; Richard J. Abel and Robert W. Schiff, post presidents of the UJF and members of the National Campaign Cabinet of tho United Jewish Appeal, wore among 650 Jewish communal leadfrs who met at a National Action Conference in New York June 9-10 to ihauguratc the second half of tho 1956 Nation- al United Jewish Appeal campaign. Leadcra from all parts of the country presented check.s to the UJA, representing cush n-niit- tancoa on their local drives. $15,- 000,000 waa brought forward at the Conference to bring the mid-year cash total of the UJA to $40,350,000 ($32,250,000 on the regular cam¬ paign, $8,100,000 on the UJA Spec ial Fund.)
Aaron Zacka, on behalf of the Columbus United Jewish Fund, presented a check for $77,000 at the Conference, bringing payments made by Columbus for both tho regular and Special Survival Fund campaigns, up to $185,225. Those arc paymv-nts made oh 19 5 6 pledges.
The funds are making possibiij the resettlement in Israel of tens of thousands ot ahxlety-gripped Jews from strife-torn North Afri¬ ca, and help aupport urgent wel¬ fare, rehabilitation and agricultur¬ al programs In Israel, E^uropu and Moslem countries.

MINYONNAIRE PICNIC AT GOLDBERG FARM
Sunday marlts the annual Agu¬ das Acl^l^^ Brotlicrliood minyon¬ naire picnic at the Goldberg Farm on Rt. 161. It waa postponed, from Sunday, June 3, because of bad weather.
There wlil be a full program of activities after the regular morn¬ ing services at 8:4& and a break¬ fast which follows.
On the program are organized games under the direction of Sam and Mandy Stellman, cmd a soft- boll game between the "AK's" and teenJigcrs.
Refreshments wlil also be avail¬ able around noon.

The sHlll and courage Comman¬ der Harel demonstrated aa the Captain of the famous "Ulegal" immigrant vessels, Exodus, Pan Europe and Pan Crescent was a prime factor In the rescue and sav¬ ing of thousands of European refu¬ gees then in the DP camps. When the well-belovcd Col. David Marcua died so tragically in larael, fight¬ ing for the establishment of the State, It was Commander Harel who was selected to join General Moshe Dayan, the preaent Chief of Staff, in accompanying the body bach to the United Statea for bur¬ ial at West Point
Colonel Kami, at SO, la a legen¬ dary hero, of the 1948 atrugglea. At
the time, he commanded an Infan- , try company and was twice wound¬ ed by machine gun fire. Although he lost tbe uae of one arm when his vehicle ran over a mine, he returned to combat duty and was second in command of a battalion.
Both men are in the United States for a limited time for the purpose o f raising Inveatment funds through larael Bond sales. Israel la now In a state of extreme strain brought on by the atern demands of aecurity. Israel Bond funds provide the meona for eco¬ nomic develdpmcnt which cannot be permitted to falter lesa the economy of the country aa a whole be weakened.
