An Open Letter
"I am addressing myself to you as a ZIoniat and aa chairman of the Histadrut campaign. On Sun¬ day. June 17, at 6 p. m.. there will be an evening dedicated to the raising of funda for the Hiatadrut. "My interest in the Hiatadrut Is another aapect of my Intereat in Israel. My primary concern la not with the ideology of this organi¬ zation, but with its function and the role it haa played and la atill playing in the building of Israel. All of the achlevementa In Israel that deserve our appreciation and pride are the handiwork of the Histadrut.
"Were It not for the Chalutzim, Israel would still be a desert with an Insignificant number of Inhabi¬ tants. The Chalutzim, llice the A- merlcan pioneers, with a sword In one hand and an axe In the other, veritably converted an arid desert land Into a land flowing with milk and honey.
"I am not speaking at this time about the political or military achievements; I primarily address myaelf to their social welfare ac- * tivltles. Let mc summarize briefly the achievements of the Histadrut tn this field;
(D—The health situayon. Kupat Hollm takes care of one million and more people. This organization spends 53% of all the money which Is required for the public medical care In the country. On the staff of the Histadrut hospitals there are 7,000 physicians who give free medical service to members of this great organization.
(2) The Histadrut carries the ' moat advanced program of old age and disability insurance.
(3)—Histadrut maintains Its own elementary school system.
(4) Histadrut operates employ¬ ment offices.
15) Histadrut sponsors sport or¬ ganizations which have a member¬ ship of 250,000 strong.
(6) Histadrut has a wide cultur¬ al program.
'7) Hiatadrut malntalna 13 chil¬ dren's homes, offering full tlmo care to close to 14,000 children.
"I also want to call your atten¬ tion to the fact that the Histadrut crosses all barriers of religious af¬ filiation. Thu Hapoel Hamlgrachi ia a member of the Histadrut, and all are pulling the load together for one purpose only that of im¬ proving the lot of tho laboring man. If we love Zion^ tf we are sincerely interested in the progress of Israel, we must support the social welfare activities of the His¬ tadrut.
"My appeal is to every Jew in Columbus to come to the evening affair which will be given at the Center June 17. Let us prove that we are In complete and total solid¬ arity with the Ylshuv." B. W. Abramson, M. D, IVesldent, Columbua Zionist DUt Cbnm. of Histadrut Ounpalgn
