Columbus Leaders Elected to Governing Bodies At 43rd Annual Meeting of JDC in New York
At the 43rd annual meeting of tho Joint Distribution Committee, the intematlonal welfare and im¬ migration organization, which was just held in New York at the Waldorf-Astoria several members of Columbus were elected to Its governing bodies.

Joseph Summer, treasurer of the United Jewish Fund, ad¬ dressed an urgent appeal to contributors to the 1057 United Jewish Fund Campt^ign to pay their pledges immediately in
rhchalf of the needs of the Fund agencies at home and abroad. Summer stated: "Every available dollar is needed to complete the allocations to these agencies so they may proceed with the work wo have called upon them to do. Cash la needed to help care for 2,000 Hungarian Jews still in Austrian refugee camps; to aid 10,000 Jewish repatriates from Russian slave camps now penniless In Poland; to assist fleeing Morroccan Jews now stranded In Algiers; to rescue more of the 38,000 Egyptian Jews still under Nasser's heel. Only CASH will per¬ mit tbe critical overseas relief, resettlement and rehabilitation
; programs to continue.

Highlighted at the annuai meet¬ ing was the major construction work being done by JDC In the European countries. North Africa and Israel. Special reports were given pn the return of JDC op¬ erations In Poland.
The Joint Distribution Commit¬ tee provided health, welfare, emi¬ gration, cultural, educational and religious services this year for about 183,000 Jews in more than 25 countries of Europe, North Africa and the Near East, includ¬ ing Israel, was reported by Ed¬ ward M. M. Warburg, JDC chair¬ man.
George L. Warren, advisor on refugees and displaced persons in the Department of State, addres- sea the assembly. Also featured on 'the program was Moses A. Leavitt. JDC executive vice-chair¬ man, who reported on the health and welfare needs of Jews in South America, Europe and Isra¬ el.
Mr. Leavitt is chalnhan of the American Council of Voluntary Agencies for Foreign Service and was a member of President EIs- enhov/or'a Committee for Hun¬ garian Refugee relief.
At business sessions earlier in the day, delegates from every section of the Unlte<i States con¬ sidered and adopted a budget for the JDC 1958 programs In vari¬ ous parts of the world. High on the agenda was a report by Charles H. Jordan, JDC director- general for overseas operations, oh the agency's aid to Jewish refugees from Egypt and Hunga¬ ry and on thp resumption of a JDC welfare program In Poland for Jews recently repatriated from the Soviet Union.
Tho JfDC receives Its funds from the United Jewish AppeEd, a major beneficiary of the Co¬ lumbus United Jewish Fund.
In addition to those regular members, four have been honor¬ ed with honorary memberships for their support and encourage¬ ment of the Newsies' cause over tho past several years.

The Silbersteln brothers have almost become a Newsic tradition in themselves. Since 1948 they have purchased the first special edition, newspaper off the press at the annual "pep dinner" pro¬ ceeding the Bale. For the past two years it has cos. them $3500 in the auction.
The work of Charity Newsies needs little explanation for vet¬ eran resiclrnt.s. They have become noted for the continual nets fif charity and quick action in emerjjencie.s.

CHANUKAH PROGRAM PLANNED DEC. 22
The annual Chanukah program of the Columbus Hebrew School ¦ will be held Sunday, Dec. 22, 2:30 p. m., at the Jewish Center. An elaborate program is being plan¬ ned for the occasion.
The program- will include two Hebrew playlets, re citations, lighting of the candles, the tradi¬ tional Chanukah songs and one ot the most recent films from Israel. A Chanukah treat from the Ivree¬ yoh-PTA will be given to all the children.
Presentation of awards to stu¬ dents, who excelled themselves- in their studies during the past school year, and prizes for good attendance will also be made at. the same time.

Highlight of the two-day meeting at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New Yorlt will be an up-to-the-minute report on Israel's progress and problems by Moshe Sharett (top left), former Prime Minister and roroign Minister of the young State. In planning the coming year's drive, .the Jewish communal leaders are faced wth critical shortages of funds needed for the absorption of hundreds of thousands of home* less Jews who found haven in Israel over the past several years, and the rescue and resettlement of many thousands during 1958. Funds raised by tha nationwide United Jewish Appeal campaign ara used to finance the work of its member agencies, the United Israel Appeal, Joint Distribution Committee and New York Associiiitlon for New Amerii'u \i. United Hias Service also bon*-^ fits from the 1967 Emergency fiescua Fund.
