(Topy photo.) iW Headquarters - Are Ransacked WASHINGTON, (JTA) - The files of the national headquarters of the Jewish War Veterans were ransacked over the week-end with mounting evidence leading police to a theory that tbe break- in waa motivated by anti-Jewish espionage. An Investigation disclosed that Items of value that would attract a common thief were Ignored. The intent of Intruders was ap¬ parently to study the oonfildential records of the JWV including tliat organization's files on hate groups. ZION, GANDLEUGHT AT "Without No Shoes," a musical comedy, will make its premiere performance tor Columbus audi¬ ences at the joint meeting of Zlon and Candlelight CJhapters of B'nai B'rlth Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. at the Jewish Center. Members of the cast„ include Mesdames Alfred Furman, Ber¬ nard Kaplan, Gary Kersteln, Har¬ vey Levine, Bernie Melmed, Alvln Press, Stuart M. NEW YORK, (JTA) - Antl- Somitcs, crackpots and malicious juveniles continued the wave of scare attacks on synagogues and other houses of worship and the telephoned throats which started In the wake of the Atlanta syna¬ gogue bombing. In the New York area, the lat¬ est series of incidents included five bomb threats: three against Jewish Institutions, one against a matzoh factory and the iast a- gainst the office of the United Arab Republic. The Jewish in¬ stitutions were: the Stephen Wise Free Syangogue; the Elizabeth, N. J., Jewish Educational Center, and the New York Guild for the Jewish Blind. MEANWHILE, six boys, rang¬ ing In age from 11 to 13 have been arrested and have admitted they smashed six windows last week in a Brooklyn Synagogue with stones. New York police re¬ ported. The. boys were charged with juvenile delinquency and released in their parents' custody for appearance Monday In Chil¬ dren's Couit. In Union, N. J., the county prosecutor announced an Investi¬ gation against "Common Sense," a hate sheet long published by CJonde McGlnley. Tho sheet was said to have been distributed In Atlanta and Peoria, III., In ad¬ vance of the synagogue bombings there. IN ATLANTA, police, assisted by the FBI, rounded up five men previously Indicted on charges of having blown up The Temple there. The indictment, returned by a grand jury, charges that the de¬ fendants "did wrlllfuUy and malici¬ ously" destroy the synagogue by using an explosive unknown to the jurors: First reports had It that dynamite had been used In this attack. The Georg i law un¬ der which the lndl( nent was drawn provides a r i x 1 m u m punlsliment of execution In the electric chair. The grand jury that indicted the five received threats and was harassed by anoymous telephone calls. The jury foreman was threatened with death. Police are protecting the homes of jury members. THE DEFENDANTS are: Wal¬ lace Allen, 32 year-old printing salesman; George Bright, 35; Kenneth Griffin, a Georgia State revenue department employe; Robert Bowling, 25, and his bro¬ ther Richard. The latter was con¬ sidered the "central figure" sought In connection with the synagogue bombing. All defendants denied the charges. Griffin asserted that the Reform temple had been bombed by "Communist Jews In an effort to discredit and smear the grow¬ ing and brave National States Rights Party." Large quantities of anti-Semitic hate literature and at least one letter Involving an¬ other anti-Negro, anti-J e w 1 s h leader was found during the ar¬ rests and accompanying searches. IN ARLINGTON, VA-, FBI agents have questioned a wealthy Baltimore man and his associate, a former Navy commander, In connection with the bombing of The Temple in Atlanta. The two were Harold Noel Ar- ' rowsmith, Jr, member of a prom¬ inent Baltimore family, and George L. Rockwell, who served as a naval aviation officer. They were interrogated Jn the search for the "fat cat" mentioned in a letter seized by Atlanta police. The letter told of a rich bene¬ factor who contributed money to finance "the big blast." Arrowsmith and Rockwell ad¬ mitted complicity in anti-Jewlsh activity. But both denied know¬ ledge of the Atlanta bombing. IRVING M. ENGa TO ADDRESS ANNUAIMEETING OF UJF Smash Windows At Newark Temple NE WYORK, (JTA) — Four¬ teen windows were smashed In an attack on Temple B'nal Abraham In Newark, New Jersey, while bomb threats were recelVed..Bby synagogues In three other New Jersey cities. The Newark police are investigating the attack on the synagogue. Rep. Robert W. Kean, New Jer¬ sey Republican, said In Newark that "every American has a stake In these Indecent acts. We must react with cold determination and a willingness to approve the necessary laws." Rep, Kean called for "tough Federal laws cracking down on terrorists," Former Sen. Herbert H. Leh. man, declared that responsibility for these extremist developments must be shared by all who "ad¬ vocate overt resistance" to the rule of law. The 33rd ajinuai dinner meet¬ ing of the United Jewish Fund will be held Nov. 11 at 6 p. m. at Winding Hollow Country Club, Samuel Shlnbach, president of UJF, announced that William V, Kahn will serve eis chairman of the Arrangements Committee. The dinner will honor the lead¬ ers of the successful 1958 UJF campaign. Election of officers and members of the board of directors for the coming drive will also take place. Highlight of the evening will be an address by Irving M. Engel, president of the American Jewish Committee. Ctost of the dinner will be $3.50 per plate.
