Mayor's Conference Lauded for Striking Against Bigotry (cvntlnDcd on psfa S) New York: The general counsel of the Anti-Defamatlon League of B'nai B'rlth last week hailed the New York State Conference of Mayors for striking a blow a- gainst bigotry by wlth-drawlng Its meeting scheduled for next month from Lake Placid Club. Officials of the Conference an¬ nounced that the June 1—June 4 meeting will be held at the Olym¬ pic Stadium In Lol^e Placid In answer to protests ,* against the Lake Placid Club's 'discriminatory policies. Addressing curtain and drapery industry leaders at their dnnual Joint Defense Appeal dinner In the SaVoy-Plaza Hotel, Arnold Forster declared: "Today's decision of tbe Con¬ ference of Mayors to withdraw from the Lake Placid Club struck a blow against bigotry in our daily living. The officials of New York State, for themselves at least, closed the gap between the democratic Ideal and actual prac¬ tice. "If their action finally per¬ suades the Lake Placid Club to abandon its un-American policy, thla will be a long stride forward. But even if it doesn't, obvloualy this incident has increased pub¬ lic awareness of the evils of re¬ ligious discrimination. In this sense, we have won a total vic¬ tory." The dinner, which touched off the industry's fimd-raising drive on behalf of the American Jewish committee and- the Anti-Defama¬ tlon League of B'nai B'rith, was in trlbtfte to Bernard Sunshine, a buyer at Macy'a, who was honor¬ ed for "outstanding service in the advoncenment of human rights and community welfare." A testimonial plaque was pre¬ sented to'Mr. Simshlne by Robert I. Lauter, merchandise adminis¬ trator in Macy'a domestics and home furnishings divisions,' who served as dinner chairman. Earlier today, at the Mayors' executive committee meeting, at the Hotel Biltmore, Mr, Forster said: "The Mayor's Conference Invit¬ ed the Anti-Defamation League to consult with It on the public policy Involved In scheduling Its convention at the Lake Placid Club. We made clear to the mayors our conviction that the Lake Placid Club Is a public re¬ sort hotel which uses the private club device In order to avoid the law pi-ohlbiting discrimination. The Lake Placid dub admittedly bars Jews from membership and as indivldua] guests. "The Mayor's Conference recog;- nizes the gratuitous insult to a large part of the citizens of the State of New York Implicit in the Lake Placid Club policy. "When the mayors scheduled their convention they did not Imow of a discriminatory policy. Having learned tbe facts they now rettse to compound the In¬ sult by retiilnlng the Lake Placid Club as their 1968 convention site. "The Anti-Defamatlon League ia delighted at tbe forthright ac¬ tion ot these public offlcei^s. We hope the convention is a great success and would urge all offic¬ ials^ who were invited to make a special effort to attend." DEADUNE for photographic material Is Monday, 10 a, m.
