The Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, falls on the first of the month of TishrL It is devoted to a re-examination of life, of our mo^al balance from the past year, and a return to the Jewish prin¬ ciples which shouldguide our conduct in the new year. As¬ sociated with it is the Shofar (the ram's horn). As inthe wilderness, where It was sounded to our forefathers, it calls upon us to assemble before God, to hearken to His commandments, and to decide upon the'new way, the direction of which is Indicated by His Torah in the arte of tha Covenant. On all holy days, atthe end of the Musaf service, the priests (Cohanlni)ascendthe Ark topronounco the blessing over the congr^ation. They do not bless Israel; they act as the mouthidece of the Lord. It is a duty rather than a privll^e for tiiem to pro¬ nounce these words of the Torah, and It is obligatory upon every Cohen (Descen¬ dant of Aaron, the Higl) Priest) abov^ th^ age of Bar Mitzvah who Is present A6 take part in the service of the priests. Rubenstein of the Agudas AcMiii Congregation.. Winner of the first award In 1968 was Rabbi David Stavsky. The Rabbinical Award ia made each year in recog¬ nition of the leadership role of tite rabbis in our coiitH munity, and to strengthenN mutual areas of interest with the United Jewish Fund and Council. The Award is a reflection of a trend among the federations and welfare fimds in America, at en¬ couraging a closer relation- v ship of the rabbinical lead¬ ers withthe work and activit¬ ies of the federations.
