WASHINGTON (WNS) - Rabbis and Jewish leaders
from all parts ofthe country converged on the nation's
capital this week in an interfaith protest against the
war in Vietnam. The protest, sponsored by. the
American Friends Service Committee and Clergy and
a Laity Concerned, is aimed at getting religious groups
into the offices of Congressmen. Rabbi Balfour
Brickner, director of Interfaith activities for the Union
of American Hebrew Congregations spoke on behalf of
Jewish groups at a meeting.
The Chicago Board of Rabbis has asked President
Nixon "to call a halt to the escalated .bombings in
North Vietnam and to return to the stance of
negotiations with patience and with firmness."
Meanwhile, in Paris the Bernard Lazare Circle, a left-
wing Zionist organization, said the renewed bombing
"completely shatters the hopes of those who thought
that peace had finally come to Indochina," and called
upon its members "and progressive Jewish opinion
• everywhere" to demonstrate its "active solidarity
with the Vietnamese people."
LONDON (WNS)- The Moscow synagogue on Ar-
chipovo Street was placed under heavy guard on the
day amnesties were granted for the Soviet Union's 50th
anniversary, and worshippers were not permitted to
congregate outside it, Jewish sources in the Soviet
Union reported. They also reported the release of Jews
sentenced to 15-day jail terms for "hooliganism" after
staging a sit-in at the Supreme Soviet Dec 18 to
demand amnesties for Jewish-political prisoners

Religious Leaders Call For Repudiation Of
Escalated Violence In Vietnam If Talks Fail
Church leaders in central
Ohio this week called upon
the people of the region to
repudiate "escalated
violence" in Vietnam "in the
unhappy but not altogether
unlikely event that the forth¬
coming negotiations" in
Paris are not successful
In an unusual display of
unanimity, high-ranking
officials of major religious
bodies expressed their
rejection of war as a means
' of settling international.
' differences and stated their
conviction that^"it is im¬
portant for our elected
leaders to know that they;
cannot expect us to support
those things Which in con¬
science we know to be
wrong"
Focusing attention on the
bombing of the populated
centers of North Vietnam,
which began after the Paris
peace talks faltered, the
churchmen' pointed 'to the
."utter horror" of this
widespread destruction of
"life, the good 'earth, and
property" and urged; their
fellow-citizens to reflect oh
these dismal facts.
It is they strongest such
statement issued by such an
inclusive group of . church
leaders. The full text of the
statement follows:
"Together with the whole
world we were relieved when -
the resumed bombing of the
populated centers of North
Vietnam was* stopped during
the religious holidays. With
much of the world we had
been horrified when the
bombing had been initiated
after the apparent collapse
of the secret negotiations in
Paris.
"Now, at the time when
these talks are about to be
resumed, we call upon our
follow-citizens in central
Ohio, to pray earnestly for ^
the full and early success of
the peace negotiations in
Paris. For too long a time
the world has witnessed the
prolongation of a conflict
which must be settled.
"We urge our fellow-
citizens in central Ohio to
reflect on the utter horror of
the widespread destruction
of life, the good earth, and
property, in that far-off part
of the world, especially the
destruction which so

ADJb: Anti-Semitism Increasing Agabi
by BILL COHEN
CHRONICLE
. SPECIAL REPORTER
Although anti-semitism in
Ohio and the U.S. has
decreased during the
twentieth century, it is now
back on the upswing, ac¬
cording to Hersch Adler-
stein, director of the Ohio-
Kentucky Anti-Defamation
League of B'nai B'rith.
Adlerstein | says that
compared with' sixty! years'
ago,1 anti-Jewish ! bias is
"way, way, way down" and
compared with thirty years
ago, it is "considerably
down,"
But the A.D.L. Director is
quick to add, compared with
five years ago, Anti-
Semitism "is up," its low
point being just before the
Arag-Israeli war of 1967.
Arab-Israeli war of 1967.
Adlerstein blames several
factors on the recent up¬
surge, the first being the.
New Left and other new
political alignments. "It is
too easy now," he says, "for
anti-Zionist positions to
move into anti-semitism."
Adlerstein, who is also the
executive director of the
UJFC's Community
Relations Committee, says
the New Left anti-semitism
"is not a major problem but
it is growing."
A second factor in the
recent increase in anti-
semitism is what Adlerstein
terms "the rise of increased
consciousness of blacks,
which has led to their;
ascribing to, J«ws the|f,
hostility {toward whites."
-.''Sliere is more black anti-
semitism than there ever
was. before," he says, "huty-i
there is still less black ahtjHVf
semitism than there is white <
anti-semitism."
Adlerstein says another
factor is "the deteriorating
economic situation in the
U.S. and the competition for
jobs." "Nobody cares if a >
Jew or a black person gets a
job when there are more
than enough jobs to go^strength of groups such as
around, but now things arf;. th> John Birch Society and
different," 'according to theKttie American Independant
A.D.L. director.
The • rise of the Jesus
revolution and fun¬
damentalist Christianity has
also contributed to some
increase in anti-semitism in
recent years, Adlerstein
says, i i He;; ,cite>v studies
showing vthatemany fun¬
damentalists-believe G-d is
punishing the Jews for their
religious beliefs and that this
punishment takes the* form
of oppression of Jews around
the world: >
Adlerstein says the-A^nti-
Defamation League is also
concerned about the growing
Party.
"These are groups which
are not, in and of them¬
selves, anti-semitic,1 but they
tend to draw anti-serhites
and they are willing to use
anti-semitic materials,"
according to Adlerstein.
He says American Party
presidential candidate, John
Schmitz, "seems to be anti-
semitic" because of his
support of a popular book in
right-wing circles called
"None Dare Call It Con¬
spiracy.?'
Adlerstein says the book
refers %. to, the ■ _ alleged,
"Jewish-communist- ~
Rockefeller conspiracy" to
control the world.
The most blatently-anti-
Jewish organizations, such
as the American Nazi Party
and the Ku Kliix Klan, ''are;
no longer powerful.
anymore," according to
Adlerstein. He adds, "There
has not existed in 25 years an
organized, viable,
significant anti-semitic
organization."

Nationalist Party has ,
