that. "we cannot " remain
silent as long as the Soviet
Union continues to hamper
or strangle the spirit and
cultural life of the Jewish
people through extreme and
special acts of dis¬

The delegates also ap¬
proved plans for more such

local levels several' times

gathering to seek permission
to enter Russia to meet with

PASSOVER, 1972 marks a
dramatic new Exodus for
Jews. everywhere to
celebrate: the Exodus of our
brave brothers from the
Soviet 'Union. Hopefully,
thousands will come home to
Israel this year, iliey want
to be free, to live as Jews,
and for this they have risked
jobs, personal security and
freedom, even physical
The Jewish ideal of
solidarity, is what has
enabled us to survive,
through all the"centuries, in
the most difficult and tryjng
times. We are as one with
our brothers, no matter how
great the distance that
separates us.
In the Megillah, the Book
of Esther which we read just
four weeks ago, Mordechai
reminds Esther that even
though she is the Queen of
Persia,..and lives in the
King's house, she cannot"
escape the fate of her fellow'

planned for them. Ancf he 7
says "Who knows — perhaps
it was for this that you were

fluent, influential, living in
security and freedom, we
cannot help but feel,: that
perhaps it was for this, that
we have come to enjoy all of'
our blessings' — :that- we
should be able,- here and
now, to save our people'; to
help our people in Israel; to
help our people; in Russia,
and Jews over the world:
,We share in the joys of a
dream come true — of Soviet
Jews coming home to Israel,
of our ancient Homeland
becoming a reality in our
time, of an Israel strong
enough* to deter all her
enemies. We must also share
in the/responsibilities for
that dream." We must help
them and all those who come
from lands of persecution,
become self sufficient,
productive members' of a
modern Israel society.
As we gather with friends
and -family at the Seder
table, as we rejoice in the
Exodus of our people from
Egypt almost four thousand
years ago, as we rejoice
anew in the Exodus from
Russia, as we rejoice in our
own fortunate position as
citizens of a country which
guarantees us all the
blessings of liberty and
freedom, let us; resolve to
KEEP THE PROMISE of
FREEDOM fop7all our
people, wherever;'they may
be, this PASSOVER of 1972!
In behalf of the officers
and members: of the Board of
Trustees of the United
Jewish Fund and Council, I
want to wish every member
of our community a joyous
and HAPPY PASSOVER!
May that joy and happiness
be increased and intensified
in the knowledge that we
have KEPT THE
PROMISE!

Tanenbaum, interreligious

mittee, told 700 persons at a
rally at Holy Name
Cathedral that He expected
President Nixon to raise the
Soviet Jewish issue with
Kremlin leaders and to
report to the American •
public on the outcome:
Rep: Robert Drinan, a
Massachusetts Democrat,
and a Jesuit priest, told the
Consultation that President
Nixon had failed to rally
American public opinion for
relief of the problems of
Soviet Jews. He said he
would visit Israel late in May
for the Consultation and
would report to the delegates
on bis findings concerning
Soviet Jewish migration to
Israel. He said he hoped that
American Christians Would
be "aroused at the in¬
justices" inflicted on Soviet
Jews and also that they-'*''
would help Israel with its
"acute problems" stemming
from its role in the "on-going
ingathering of exiles and
refugees.!' Mayor Charles .
Evers of Fayette, Miss., said
it would be "a disgrace to
American" Jews'.' if
President Nixon did .not tell
Soviet officials to "let our
people go." He said he had
come to the meeting because
he remembered Jewish
participation in the
Mississippi civil, rights
struggle and "I do pot forget
those who helped me,'".
Black Congressmen Defend ,
Israel, Laud Aid To Blacks
WASHINGTON (WNS) —
In .what was unofficially
described as a rebuttal to an
anti-Israel resolution
adopted at the Black
Political Conference in
Gary, Ind., on.March 12, the
Congressional Black Caucus,
strongly supported'this week
Israel's "right to existence':"
The Caucus statement also
hailed Israel's support, of "30
Black African nations, from'
Burundisto Zambia:" The
statement, signed by all 13
Black members of the
House, said the example' set
by the Jewish people in
overcoming oppression and.
winning freedom, from
Moses to the State of Israel,
had helped Black Americans
"to strive for self-respect
and dignity and to revive
their own'cultural heritage."
Tbe Gary resolution, pushed
through in the last'hours of
the Gary conclave, called for
the dismantling of Israel.
The Caucus statement was
- prepared after questions
were raised on where Black
Congressmen stood relative
to the Gary-resolution. It was
reported that Caucus
-members had not been
present then but would have
fought the resolution if they
had been therel
The 300-word statement of
the Caucus said in part: "As
the Black elected
weaken or undermine
Israel's right to existence...
The American people, in¬
cluding Black Americans,
have cherished the friend¬
ship of both the peoples of
Israel and the. Arab states.
Our government, reflecting
that friendship, has sought to
promote an Arab-Israeli
peace;; f . .. Moreover, we
think it appropriate to call
special attention to the
cordial relationships Israel
has maintained with the-^>^
developing Black nations in
Africa and the Third World
nations in Asia . .7 As these
new states were established,
many were impressed and
helped by Israel's example.
