President Nixon has been asked by 165 Protestant^- Catholic, Greek Orthodox and Jewish leaders to convey to Soviet leaders during,his May s visit - to Moscow' a request to end. immediately •^'discrimination and denials pf Soviet Jewry and others" . and to' grant "now", fun¬ damental human rights to all Soviet citizens. The proposal was contained in a resolution at the, close of a. two-day National Interreligious -Consultation on Soviet Je"wry7 The "Manifesto of Conscience" also declared, that. "we cannot " remain silent as long as the Soviet Union continues to hamper or strangle the spirit and cultural life of the Jewish people through extreme and special acts of dis¬ crimination. The delegates also ap¬ proved plans for more such meetings on regional and local levels several' times annually; an interfaith gathering to seek permission to enter Russia to meet with Soviet Jewish " political prisoners; and an interfaith delegation to seek a meeting with President Nixon to give him a Copy of the manifesto. We are as one with our brothers, no matter how great the distance that separates us. In the Megillah, the Book of Esther which we read just four weeks ago, Mordechai reminds Esther that even though she is the Queen of Persia,..and lives in the King's house, she cannot" escape the fate of her fellow' Jews) which Haman has planned for them. Rabbi Mark H. Tanenbaum, interreligious affairs director of the American .Jewish Com¬ mittee, told 700 persons at a rally at Holy Name Cathedral that He expected President Nixon to raise the Soviet Jewish issue with Kremlin leaders and to report to the American • public on the outcome: Rep: Robert Drinan, a Massachusetts Democrat, and a Jesuit priest, told the Consultation that President Nixon had failed to rally American public opinion for relief of the problems of Soviet Jews. He said he would visit Israel late in May for the Consultation and would report to the delegates on bis findings concerning Soviet Jewish migration to Israel. He said he hoped that American Christians Would be "aroused at the in¬ justices" inflicted on Soviet Jews and also that they-'*'' would help Israel with its "acute problems" stemming from its role in the "on-going ingathering of exiles and refugees.!' Mayor Charles . Evers of Fayette, Miss., said it would be "a disgrace to American" Jews'.' if President Nixon did .not tell Soviet officials to "let our people go." He said he had come to the meeting because he remembered Jewish participation in the Mississippi civil, rights struggle and "I do pot forget those who helped me,'". Black Congressmen Defend , Israel, Laud Aid To Blacks WASHINGTON (WNS) — In .what was unofficially described as a rebuttal to an anti-Israel resolution adopted at the Black Political Conference in Gary, Ind., on.March 12, the Congressional Black Caucus, strongly supported'this week Israel's "right to existence':" The Caucus statement also hailed Israel's support, of "30 Black African nations, from' Burundisto Zambia:" The statement, signed by all 13 Black members of the House, said the example' set by the Jewish people in overcoming oppression and. winning freedom, from Moses to the State of Israel, had helped Black Americans "to strive for self-respect and dignity and to revive their own'cultural heritage." Tbe Gary resolution, pushed through in the last'hours of the Gary conclave, called for the dismantling of Israel. The Caucus statement was - prepared after questions were raised on where Black Congressmen stood relative to the Gary-resolution. It was reported that Caucus -members had not been present then but would have fought the resolution if they had been therel The 300-word statement of the Caucus said in part: "As the Black elected weaken or undermine Israel's right to existence... The American people, in¬ cluding Black Americans, have cherished the friend¬ ship of both the peoples of Israel and the. Arab states. Our government, reflecting that friendship, has sought to promote an Arab-Israeli peace;; f . ..
