This is a rare opportunity to meet and .hear a man who is rapidly becoming one of the hcst-known Jews in the Middle West. Ah open ' forum discuasion will follow the judge's address. Hadassah Linen Shower Will Take Place Sunday at the Community House Elaborate Prograin has been ranged for Affair Tomorrow Aftcrnoim Bialik Program To Be Presented By Herzlia Tomprrpw Evening, Feb, 21 American Jewry has been, honored, with the coming to this country, of the great Jewish Poet Laureate. For the .first time he has seen the American Jew, and,Bialik said of them, "the American Jews are identically the same Jews as ,m> brethrep in Europe and Palestine;." Bialik is the Outstandiilg poet of the .wJewish people^ and yet very few Jews in America know much about his great works. In every Jewish community, Bialik programs hgve <been arranged, to present the beautiful verse of Bialik to the Jews and show his greatness to the Jews in the rejuvenation of the Jewish Spirit in Palestine, . 'Iii this respect the Herzlia Zion Club, of Coliimbus, has, arranged a grand program, whereby the Jewish community of Columbus may the opportunity to obtain a better understanding of the works of their national poet. .The pre¬ sentation wilt take place Sunday evening, February 21,; 7:30 P. U., at the Agudath Achim S'ynagogite. . Prominent speakers have been ar¬ ranged for as well as musical recitals. The speakers will include the following: Dr. I. Werne, Dr. Lee J, ^Levinger, Rab¬ bi L. Greenwald, Dr. B. W. Abram¬ son, Mr. L Muscat, Mr. P. Gaiser. Mr, M, Bornstein. A special representative ¦ from the N.,Y. Zionist Organization will also speak at the occasion, . . Columbus Jews are urged to attend this great spiritual program to show their respect, and give honor to their great poet, and also to hear what will be presented about Bialik.. The entire conitnuhity is welcome to attend this program. There will be, no collections. Remember the great eve,nt, to take place ' February 31, 7:90 P. M. at tbe Agudath Achim Syiiagogite. The committee in cbEirge has. spared no efforts in arranging a most delight ful program for the Linen Shower to be held Sunday afternoon, February 21st, at three ..o'clock at the Schonthal Community House upder the auspices ofthe Columbus Hadassah Society. .Mrs. Elma Ehrlich Levinger who has already made a name for herself among the various local . organizations during her short residence here, will address those present on a subject" close to the heart of every, Jewish wdmanj "Train¬ ing in the Home for the Homeland.", Miss Estelle Fisher .will render a group of vocal, selections, and a number of violin soios will be given by Lawrfciice' Sobel. A specialty number.will be pre¬ sented by Miss Sylvia Bogatin who with her sister Zelda will, also appear in a novelty act.' The entertainment will be followed by a tea and social hour. Mrs. J. Krako¬ witz, Mrs. J. Mattlin, Mrs. M..Bogatin and Mrs, L. Gtoldberg arc serving on the committee ¦ which has the^ Linen Shower in charge. Due to the fact that this is the only time during the year whenthe Hadassah ¦solicits contributions to help supply the hospitals in Palestine with linen .neces sities, it is hoped that every Jewish woman will respond willingly. Those. who cannot bring donations personally or have not had the time to biiy any linens may send cash contributions to Mrs. B. W. Abramsnn, 838 E. Livingston Aveuue. Every offering, regardless of how small, wiU be deeply appreciated. The cause is a most worthy one and therefore deserves, a whole-hearted re¬ sponse. .. Historical Analysis . 1 It seems to me, therefore, that the' idlcyed cleavage between Jew and non- Jew on the score of pacifism also falls away' niidcr the scrutiny of historical analysis. Lcwisbhn apparently belongs to the category of people who think that when they look into a mirror they sec a whole nation, whereas, as a matter of. fact, they see only themselves. The same might be said of the authbf of "You Gentiles", Lewisohn is_ a pacifist, so he concludes that the Jewish people is .a pacifist" people. Lewisohn and Samuel do not enjoy football games. Therefore, they conclude that the Jewish people is devoid.of the sport psychology, although a Visit to any footbail stadium or,pugi-' listic arena or .baseball Held would re¬ veal a. more than adequate proportion of Jevvisli patrons. Lewisohn is not prone to write lyrics but feels inclined instead toward thc art of the critic, therefore he concludes tliat lyric pofetry is not congenial to. the Jewish nature, forgetting that one of the greatest lyric romantic poems of all, time is "-The Song of Songs"; On one point alone is Lewisohn's ex¬ perience the -universal experience of the jew, and that is, in the "Judenschmerz".' He has been made to suffer for being a Jeiv. He has not "attained the position and recognition to which his genius en¬ title him. He, has been woimded,, and therein he has suffered the universal hurt which comes, to every Jew at some time in his career. Ludwig Lewisohn has been Unhappy. He has been groping for something, to giye him peace. At last; he has found himself'in Zion, likeiso matiy others before, him. He has foiind himself in his own people from whom he had been removed all his life. Reading between the lines," one. can see iii his book his personal problem and his Jewish re-, affirmation. Viewed, in this Jight, the book is a document of vital power, . But as a diagnosis of tbe,Jewish .problem, it is not sound. Its premises are wrong. First, the Jew is not unassimliable, and second^ the. Jew. is not by nature and history a pacifist. Therefore, there is. no necessary or inevitable cleavage be¬ tween Jew and Gentile except in the Jewr ish will to carry'on his" national, re¬ ligious, and racial heritage by means'of the institutions which he has. developed in the course of his history. The Jewish problem exists" because every persistent minority creates a prob¬ lem for itself. What gives edge to. the Jewish problem especially, is,the uniquely decisive memories , which separate Jew and Christian^ Naturally, those dif¬ ferences. will. become accentuated iii times, of war, not because thc Jewish attitude toward peace clashes with the Gentile attitude, but because any crisis like war.Is bound to ;iccentuatd dififer- L'liccs. Thus, [--cwisohiVs entire thesis becomes reconstructed upon the bjisis tif The Jewish Will to Live. The True Mission of Jew Tho iriission of the Jew is, as I siicit, liot that' he shall be the international pacifist with headquarters in Zion, or tbp i.ntcriiatiohal rationalist,' or the inter- natinir.il anything. The Jew. takes his place as a citizen of the country where- cver he niay. be. His unique function "as the propagandist, of Monotheism has long.ago been exhausted. Even i,f he had been at one time thc. preacher of pacifism^ that function too would by now have become exhausted. As pacifist or as ihonotheist the Jew is no longer di-stinct or distinguished.- /These ideals have bcen'adopted by the best conscience of humanity, and fuid their protagonists among the Gentiles as well as among, the Jews. John Spargo, John Haynes Holnies, and Harry Emerson Fosdick may be cited as outstanding Chrislians .who arc dedi¬ cating their lives to the ideals of peace and to the doctrine of monotheism. On the other hand, one could mention the names of Jews who are in every way loyal tothe traditions of Israel,.but who are - militarists and reactionaries in their political, views. To exalt" the Jew as the, international leaven standing out from all his fellowmen for-the sake of preaching certain <]Octriiies, is, it seems to me, gratuitous. The Jew. need not separate himself from'the context of the ¦ hunian, society in which he lives. .If he is to be a protagonist of peace' or a chanipioh of monotheism or an adherent of rationalism, he-can be these thiiigs not as Jew but as a; citizen. All that he lieed do as a Jew is tO live, the Jewish life, by, which, is, meant not, oiily .to accept the Jewish doctrine of God and the world, but first, to feel, his! identity as a descendant of:Abraham, Isaac and Jacob aiid as a brother to Jews in all lands, .second, to cultivate a knowledge of.."Jewish hifetory and literature, .and hand on that-knowledge to his'children, supplementing it by the observance of Jewish ceremonies'a.ii'd by the creation pf Jevvish atmosphere In the home, all as a means of strengthening the Jewish consciousness in hi(mself arid iri his posterity, and third*. to , render "active service in the; cause of Israel through Jewish philanthropy or the promotion of Jewish education, or the affiliation with a Jewish Congregation, In other words, the mission of the Jew is to derive his spiritual sustenance as a man and citizen,' from the Jewish backgfpiind even as men- derive their spiritual ,sustenance Initially, from their family, relationships. Thus nourished by his Jewish inspiration, the Jew can with assurance, play his part as the citi¬ zen and neighbor. By. playing his part nobly,.he can .jirove the right of Israel to go oh living as a persistant minority in the midst cjf the nations. ROBERT K.
