JERUSALEM (WNS) — Mayor Teddy Kollek
warned that Jews may become a minority in
Jerusalem if the intensive development of the city ,
continues. Kollek told an economic symposium that
10,000 hotel rooms were lo be built in Jerusalem within
the next 10 years, mainly by Arab laborers,- and they
will settle in the city and may become the majority, he
said. At present there are 70,000 Arabs in Jerusalem
out of a population of 270,000.
BONN (WNS) — United Nations Secretary General
Kurt Waidheim in a television interview said he
favored the withdrawal of Israeli troops from "the
occupied territories" instead of from "occupied
territories." Observers here said that Waidheim,
therefore "clearly-favors" the withdrawal of Israel
troops from all of the occupied territories. .
. NEW YORK (WNS) — Gavriel Shapiro, Soviet
Jewish activist, was found guilty of evading military
service at a two-hour trial and sentenced to one year of
"corrective labor." Shapiro will be permitted to live at
home, but he must work at any job the government
decides on. Shapiro's American wife, •Judith Silver
Shapiro, said it was largely through world opinion that
her husband avoided imprisonment.,Mrs. Shapiro said
she was' 'prepared to move and establish my home and
family" in the Soviet Union "if there is no other
alternative." She said she would continue her efforts to
obtain a'visa to the Soviet Union. g,'' ' •
Premier Meir Calls On President Sadat To
Make Joint Effort To Solve All Problems
JERUSALEM (JTA) —
Premier Golda Meir called
on President Anwar Sadat of
Egypt last week to "make a
joint supreme effort" with
Israel "to arrive at an
agreed solution to all the
outstanding problems." She
repeated Israel's readiness
to accept Egypt's suggestion
for a "special arrangement"
to reopen the Suez Canal.
"Such1 a settlement," she
said, "could make a real
contribution toward an
/overall agreed peace set-,
tlement.'" Mrs. Meir made
her appeal for peace
negotiations in the course of
a lengthy speech to the
Knesset July 26 in which she
stated her government's
evaluation of recent
developments in Egypt,
particularly Sadat's ouster
of Soviet military advisors.
(In Washington, State

Department spokesman
Charles Bray refused to
comment on Premier Meir's
Knesset statement including
her offer to negotiate an
interim Suez agreement. He
declined comment on all'
other aspects of the Middle
East situation as well and
refused to say whether US
Mideast! policy had Changed
since Secretary of State
William P. Rogers' 1969
speech in which he spoke of
minor -territorial ad¬
justments.)
"It is still premature to
make a reliable evaluation of
the reasons, scope and
results" of the Soviet with¬
drawal, Mrs. Meir said.
However, she said that on
the basis of the information
her government: had, the
pullout did hot mean the end
of Russia's strategic
presence in Egypt...She
- estimated the Russian
presence in Egypt up to the
time of the, pullout - at' oyer
manning jet fighter
squadrons and anti-aircraft
missile batteries, the ex¬
perts and advisors were
ordered to leave but not the
instructors, Mrs. Meir said.
She said the demand for
evacuation also affected
Soviet operational units
integrated into the Egyptian
air defense system and that
"perhaps also the in¬
terceptor squadrons' haye

JERUSALEM, (JTA) —
The Russians are going.
Sadat has spoken, Golda
Meir has spoken, and still it
would be a rash man who
claimed to know exactly
what has taken place or/Who
sought to predict the future
with any degree of certainty.
Mrs. Meir herself said in the
Knesset "It is still
premature to make a
reliable evaluation of the
reasons, scope and result Of
this decision taken by the
Egyptian government."
Just as the Israel govern¬
ment still feels itself, to some
extent, in the dark, and not
for want of assiduous wat¬
ching and listening, so the
US too has not yet arrived at
a final evaluation of -the
Soviet pullout and its
possible repercussions.
Washington,has,already had
- to r&ceajr from Defense
""Secretary Laird's
'assessment last week that
only 5000 Russian ser-
vvicemen would be involved
in the withdrawal. A greater
number have already left
and tnore are still leaving.
The hasty and ignominious
Soviet withdrawal, on
President Sadat's em¬
barrassingly peremptory
orders, will surely not be the
end of the episode. Many
experienced political ob¬
servers stressed as
noteworthy Moscow's
ominous silence following
Sadat's sudden public ouster
of the Russian advisors and
experts. Only several days
after the Egyptian
President's announcement
did the official Soviet news
media record briefly; that the
advisors were returning
home from Egypt. oh the
