I. Zangwill Recently Attacked Aims and Ideals of the K, K* K.
Brilliant Anglo-Jewish Author
Wrote a Thought-Provoking
Keply to B'nai B'rith
Magazine's Interview
• With Imperial Wiz-
¦ ¦: . ard Evans -
SEVERELY CRITICIZED
THE NORDIC THEORY
¦ CINCINNATI. —The fire ancrforcc of Israel ZaiigwiU's brilliant pen were turned recently against the American
, Ku Klux Klan,, it was learned today, when Alfred M; Cohen, national head of the I, O. B. B., made public an inter¬ view in which Zangwill had discussed
; the claims and viewpoint of the Klaii, through the medium of the B'nai B'rith i Magazine. This publication printed iti | parallel cohimnsan interview, the first
..authorized statement ever given by hini,
¦ with Dr. Hiram W. Evans, imperial _ wizard of the Klan, This statement had .been presented to Zangwill for reply, for
publication in the B'rtai B'rith Maga¬ zine. ', ,..
Dr. Evans' Statement Zapgwiirs attack centered largely :.on
¦ Dr. Evans^. statement regarding the Jews, " in which the imperial wizard said:
¦; "Of the, good qualities of the Jewish , character I am as well aware as is any man. ^ Wandering ever since his "ejec¬ tion froiti Judea,. nearly, everywhere persecuted, tlie Jew, I am happy to say, has had a better home in America than in; almost any other land' in which he has lived. One-fifth of his'race is here. By deliberate election he is unassimilablE. He fojects inter-marriage. His religious and social rites and customs are in¬ flexibly segregative. Law abiding, healthy^ moral, mentally alert; energetic; loyal and reverent in his home life, the Jew is yet by primal instinct .a jew, indelibly marked by persecutioii, with uo deep national attachment, a stranger.to
¦ the emotion of patriotism asthc Anglo- Saxon feels it., Klahsmeirhave no quar-
¦ rcl with. him,, no -hatred : to him, no tliought of persecuting.Tiim, As Protes¬ tants are unavailable |or membership in all Jewish societies, so Jews are ¦ un¬ available .for meriibersli.ip in an all-Prpt- estant society like, the klati. Moreover^
¦their jealously guarded, separatism uiifits them for co-operation in ,a. movement dedicated to the thorough unification of the dominant strains in American life."'
ZangWiirs Reply
, , To these aild to the other claims of Dr.. Evans that the Ku Klux Klan de^
"sired to pre-serve the integrity of the Christian faith, the Nordic race and; the American. Government, Mr.. Zangwill
¦ ansvvered: . ¦ '
¦ "Dr. Evans envisages a Nordic God- not a.Universal God, but a Nordic God.
..Now all, this'Nordic idea is rubbish. Dr. Evaiis' wpuld nationaliz(j God, 01^ natural¬ ize Him—not, indeed, as an American' God, but as a Nordic .God omnipotent iif America. As to this notion of nat- uraliziiig God as an American, I- know of no adequate propf that He has lived in this country for the last five years, America was not discovered utitil 1402, and. God had a home somewhere before that. . . ' I .;
¦ "Dr. Evans' Christian civilizaitioii and his ignorant Nordicisra reially will not dp for America: Christianity alvyays has been a mhiority religion. It (s a re¬ ligious rebellion. When the/rebellioh succeeded and ¦. Coiistantinc /stablished Christianity as a state religi^i, it turned iiitp paganism, plus cer||jn dogmas. Neither with his reli^ious&pr with his racial.Idea has Dr. Evai^started soon enough. He might be ab% to carry out his program in Alaska^ he cannot carry it out in" America, JfEvents in America have anticipated "hfm. He .is also too late in the Kti Elux Klan movement.

Many Other Well-Known Public Men Will Speak at Corner-Stone Lay- ¦ ing Exercises — Entire Com- . munity ,Is Cordially Invited
Rabbi Herman.Hailperin, of the Tree bf Life Congregation^ Pittshurghj PJi,, has graciously consented to be on the speakers' program for the corner-stone laying exercises of the new East Broad Street Temple, tomorrow ¦ (Sunday), afternoon at 2:C0 P. M. sharp, ;
He has jiist returned from art exten¬ sive tour of. England, Germany,.France, Italy, Egypt,-and Palestine. In the last named country he spent five full weeks studying the possibilities and potentiali¬ ties of a Jewish homeland.
He is now completing the fifth year of his successful ministry hi the Tree of Life Congregation. He is a gradu^ at(! of the Jewish Theological-Seminary of'America and holds degrees from New York and Columbia Univ.ersities. .^ , Besides-! Ralibi, Hailperin, the' follow-r ini; speakers will also, be on the pro¬ gram ; Dr, Jacob Tarshish, Rabb.i br.' Isaac Werne, Goyernpr A. Vic Donahey, Judge Daniel H, Sowers, 'Rabbi; Jacob Klein, Harry Kohn,' Edwin J. Schan: furber,' Mayor James J. Thomas, Joseph (Dad.) Schoiithal, Alfred J. Kobacker- and H. Kqbacker, Ben F.,Levinson will prcside.-
Music will be furnished by a popular' Colunibus . orchestra. , Several local ar¬ tists, win ¦ sing and .play. ¦ Every niern-. ber of the East Broad Street Temple is looking forwardto the corner-stone lay¬ ing exercises with keen ^anticipation..
-The exercises will be held this Sunday, August .15th, rain or shine. Do your duty and be there.
Dr. Morris M.' Feuerlicht of Indianapolis, Jnd., in a., paper ite read at the recent sesjnoti. of the Central Conference of American Jiabhis, gave ah e,%'hai{stive and scholarly, but none the less popttfar, presentation of thc influence af. Judaism on the foimders of tfw .Republic,
The foUoimng article is the first of a series of .three all dealing with thc various phases of this development, wktch is of absorbing interest to all Ameri¬ cans.—EmtoTi. . , ¦
The Sesqui-Centennial. 6f American Independence this year provides a fittiiig though somewhat belated opportunity for studying the relationship, if-any, be¬ tween that important event in world histpry and Judaism. Did Judaism, as an historical religion, as a tlieoiogical and iCthical systism professing to be world-wide in its scope, and application, exert any influence upon- the founding and thc founders 6r the American Republic; and if so, to what extent?
If there was Indeed any such infllUence, the facts were obviously significant in the philosophy of general as well as in that bf Jewish history, arid should long since have afforded our American Jewish scholafship a particularly inviting field for early investigation; With a full consciousness of his own. only too patent limitations, the writer cannot pretend that this paper will prove to have miet the invitation even superficially. It can only claim, at best, to'point out the need pf a more intensive and extensive stiidy than, unfortunately, has thus far been given it, of a; highly important and fascinating pliase of Jewish and secular history.
Only Sparsely Utilized
Up to this timd, the available material and. soutces have been phly sparsely utilized. ,Graetz, world histprian of modern Jewry and expositor of the various currents of Judaism as they have flowed into the diverse lives and philosophies of modern civilized peoples,'has only a few rather dubious words to say about the progress of the Jew in America, and.hone at all about tlie role of Judaism in the dramatic unfolding of the new Republic.
The American: Jewish Historical Society, organized in 18!)2, has published Fbuie.thirty volumes of admirable and inyaluable source materials generally, but dealing in,large if not in major part vvith a. wide variety of fragmentary items of A more or less personal nature concerning, individuals and : incidents, of e:irly Jewish residence in America.". Peter Wiernifc's "History of the Jews in, America", published in' lifi2, presents a creditable though popular and journalistic com-, pendiuin of many of these items up to ;the time of itg own publication, ¦ Witliin the last year, li)25, Dr, Louis I. Nevvman, has published a voluminous work, 'Jewish .influence on Christian. Reform Movements", whose concluding'chapter, ."Hebraic Aspects of .American Pui-itanism'',. presents ah apprPpriate and interest- , the only momentary peep into the regidnof Judaism's actual or potential re¬ lationship to the beginnings pf American demccracy. :' '
Straus' Bodk .
The inost pertinent and extensive, tlibugh.far froni exhaustive, work on this subject is that of the late Dscar S. Straus on "Thc Origin of Republican' Form of Government'in the. United States of America", first published .in. 1885, .followed, by two later edijioiis, the last in -I9Dl;rand all unfortunately now, out of print.
The case of JnUaisnt's .irifluehce, through its Bible at least, on the founding of the .American Rep'uWic, and as made.out by Mr.' Straus, is :sticcessfully e.stalv lished, according to the late M. Emile de LtLveleye.'erhinent Belgian publicist and, roEessorat the University of; Liege. General historiahs also, like Ixcky, Fiske Slid others, have been eqiially frank in. conceding^ such influence. The now fre- c[ueiitly quoted passage,of Lecky's, "Tlic Hebraic mortar cemented: the fpunda- t:ons of American .democracy",!is a typical expression of'the cotrimoiily accepted verdict. Judaism on the foimders of tfw .Republic, The foUoimng article is the first of a series of .three all dealing with thc various phases of this development, wktch is of absorbing interest to all Ameri¬ cans.—EmtoTi. . , ¦ The Sesqui-Centennial. Only Sparsely Utilized Up to this timd, the available material and. soutces have been phly sparsely utilized. ,Graetz, world histprian of modern Jewry and expositor of the various currents of Judaism as they have flowed into the diverse lives and philosophies of modern civilized peoples,'has only a few rather dubious words to say about the progress of the Jew in America, and.hone at all about tlie role of Judaism in the dramatic unfolding of the new Republic. :' ' Straus' Bodk .
