WASHINGTON, (JTA) -
President Carter July 6 "re¬
assured" a large delegation
of the Conference of Presi¬
dents of Major, American
Jewish Organizations that'
"there was no deviation"
from his support of^ Israel,
according to the chairman of
the Conference, Rabbi Alex¬
ander Schindler.
"We were particularly
pleased with the definition of
peace," Schindler told news¬
men after the more than
hour-long meeting in the
White House which he. ter¬
med a "very fruitful, helpful
and frank discussion." He
said the President stressed
that a Mideast peace means
to him the normalization of
relations, the absence of
economic and propaganda
warfare and the establish¬
ment Of trade, human con¬
tacts and cultural ex¬
changes.
Schindler said the delega¬
tion of more than 20 Jewish
leaders "expressed our ap¬
prehension" about some of
Carter's recent statements
on the Mideast which he told
the President could be "mis¬
interpreted" as a "blueprint
to be imposed" as well as
raise Arab expectations.
However, Schindler stressed
"there is no difference in the
goal we both pursue, mainly
the goal to achieve peace in
the Middle East."
iWhen asked whether he
thought that Carter's recent
actions had conflicted with ,
his campaign statements.
Schindler said, "No." He
said he agreed with the
President's statement that a
solution to the Palestinian
problem must be found. He
said neither. Jerusalem nor
the West Bank were dis.-_
cussed July 6.
At the outset of the meet¬
ing,, newsmen heard Carter

JERUSALEM (WNS) *- Israeli Premier Menachem '
1 Begin and Egyptian President'Anwar Sadat are in ap¬
parent agreement that the Geneva conference could be
reconvened in October. Begin first suggested the -
October date and Sadat responded favorably in a
speech to the Organization of African Unity in Libre¬

that the Palestine'Liberation Organization be partner
i to any peace negotiations, which the Israelis reject.
But,*• Begin welcomed Sadat's response.. ,and
suggested Oct. 10, a date'shortly after the Jewish High
Holy Days. "Any positive reaction on the side of the
Arab leaders to Israeli suggestions will be received
here with blessings." the,Israeli premier said. But he
stressed that in the final analysis it is the content.not

. SKOKIE, 111., <JtA)~A
leader of the Jewish com-

Jewish Defense League
(JDL) July 5 for stirring up
"the fears of "our people"
that Nazis would eventually
win their court battle to
march through'this heavily
Jewish populated, suburb of
Chicago,. ,Sol Goldstein, a
board member of the Jewish
United. Fund (JJJF) of
Metropolitan Chicago, was
referring to a statement to
that effect by Rabbi Meir
Kahane at a JDL rally
staged here July 4.*' -«' < p«i •
The rally was held despite
the .fact that a threatened
July 4 Nazi march was
called off in compliance with
a court injunction obtained
by the Village of Skokie in
support of its ordinances
barring the march. Kahane,
founder of the militant or¬
ganization, exhorted a crowd
estimated' at 400 to "kill
Nazis now" and "every Jew
a .22." ■
Frank Collin, leader of the
so-called National Socialist
Party of America, told the
' Chicago Daily News that the
JDL rally "sets amafvelous
precedent that the Skokie or-,
dinances are invalid" and
that "the Jews played
directly into our hands.''
The' aim of the .Jewish
community was to reduce
'tension and for that reason
the JUF's Public Affairs
Committee cancelled what
