the best long term interest of
the Jewish community.
The agenda for tonight's
meeting includes the analysis of the.reasons for keeping the Jewish Center here
on College Avenue, handing
out petitions, and lists of residents to contact, and giving
interested citizens a chance
to express their' personal
reasons for wanting the Jewish Center to rebuild at the
1125 College Ave. - location.
These public testimonials
will be tape1 recorded -'and'
transcribed for presentation
to Board members in an attempt to convince them of
the sincerity and urgency of
the requests to drop consideration of an alternate site.

tion of the new Center. In a
letter to Board 61 Trustee
members; Dr.' James Tennenbaum; President of the
Center, told board members
that after 12 months the
Joint Committee of the Jewish Center/Federation had

Reports Carter Feared
New War In Mid-East
WASHINGTON (WNS)-
Reports have been circulating here that President
Carter invited Israeli
Premier Menachem. Begin
and Egyptian Premier President Anwar Sadat to meet
with him at his Camp David,
Md. retret Sept. 5 because he
feared the dangers of a new
Middle East war. The Jerusalem Post said Carter expressed his fears of a new
war in October to Hedrick
Smith of the New York
Times and Barbara Walter
ABC-TV at an off-the-record
dinner. But Presidential
News Secretary Jody Powell
said: Aug. 11 the President's
invitation was "not based on
any -particular event." He
would not comment on ah
Egyptian military buildup'
that reportedly led to the.
summit. ■*
Meanwhile, the State Department warmly welcoihed
Saudi Arabia's endorsement-,
of theCamp David Meeting.
"We greatly appreciate the
support of the^ Kingdom of
Saudi: Arabia for the Camp
David Meeting," Department Spokesman Hodding
Carter1 said in a prepared
statement, "and remain
hopeful that the talks
between the two leaders with
President Carter as a participant will further the movement toward the just and
last peace we all seek."
In Israel, Foreign Minister
Moshe Dayan has recently
initiated meetings - with
former Presidient Yitzhak

job of the Joint Committee to
evaluate the College Avenue
site, but to see jf any other
sites existed that were corn-
parable or had potential for
development of a Jewish
Center and/or other Jewish
communal facilities." Tennenbaum further stated that
the new alternative and the
present College Avenue site
would now be thoroughly reviewed by the Center Board
for final determination of a
preferred location, for the
new building.
The letter also announced
a timetable of meetings in
which the process of site
selection would be concluded. The Center Board
will visit the alternate location on Sunday, Sept. 10. A
Board meeting will be held
Monday, Sept; 11, to discuss
information being prepared
by architects and the Center
professional staff. An open
meeting to present the information to the Center membership and Jewish community is set for Monday, Sept.
18, and \vill' include a slide
presentation of the-site.-The
concluding Board meeting is
planned for Wednesday,
Sept. 20, at which/ the'final
vote of the Board is planned.
Board members are urged in
the letter to attend the open
forum on Sept. 18 to hear the
points of view expressed by
community people.
Tennenbaum also sought
to clarify a quote that appeared in a recent Chronicle
interview on the.subject of
the new Center. Tennenbaum stated, "The quote
/indicated that it would take
five (5) more years before a
Jewish Center would be
built. The intent of the quote
was that the entire process
for building a Jewish Center
takes five years. We are
somewhere in our second
year with about'ii_ years to
go for fundraising, developing our schematic and working drawings and 1 year to
IV2 years for the actual
, building of the new Jewish
'Center."
Tennenbaum concluded,
"We look forward with great
enthusiasm to the building of
anew Jewish Center wherever it may be built. Our
main objective is to provide
the-best arid mbst;,functiorial
building with the finest service for the Jewish commu-
