FOCAL Meeting
Well Attended
A capacity crowd of well
over 100 people attended the
FOCAL meeting last week
where opposition to the relocation of the Jewish Center
to a further-East site was
backed by demographic,
practical and moral arguments in favor of retaining
the present location for the
new building.
For Our College Avenue
Location (FOCAL), a public
citizens lobby group, held
the meeting at The Melton
Building last Thursday evening. Those in attendance
represented a wide range of
neighborhoods, - ages ' and
professions. Dr. Seth Greenberg presented demographic
and moral issues which
question the wisdom of
moving the Center. Rabbis
David Stavsky and Roger
Klein lent religious, ethical
and sociological support to
our goals. Bruce Gilbert reviewed the population distributions and showed that
the Bexley-Berwick-East-
moor area has less access to
full athletic facilities other
than the present Center's
than do our suburban Jewish
community.
Petitions have been signed
by over 200. Volunteers will
be calling at the homes of
Jewish Center members and
non-members to ask that
additional—petitions be
signed. FOCAL leadership
. suggests . that every concerned citizen of the Columbus Jewish community take
the following' steps to insure
a maximum effort to keep
the Center on its current site.
1. Make your voice heard
and your presence felt at the
Sept. 18 public meeting sponsored by the Jewish Center
Board of Directors. /
2. Make known your position on the move to a voting
member of the Jewish Center Board of Directors,
3. Write letters to the Ohio
Jewish Chronicle (c/o Letters to the'Editor) and the
Board of Directors, c/6
Columbus Jewish Center,
and please forward a copy of
each to FOCAL, c/o Bruce
Gilbert, 2502 Stafford PI.,
Columbus 43209, so a package of convincing arguments
can be compiled to present to
Board members at the Sept.
11 meeting.
4. Sign and circulate petitions. To volunteer to carry
petitions, call Joyce' Ros-
singer at 237-5171 or Pearl
Fishman at 236-8330,
5. If interested in contributing to the building fund for
a new. facility, at College
Ave., call FOCAL co-chairman Bruce Gilbert at 231-

JERUSALEM (WNS)-
Premier Menachem Begin
said Aug. 20 that he will propose new ideas about partial
peace with the Arabs when
he meets with President
Carter and Egyptian President Anwar Sadat at Camp
David Sept. 5. The Cabinet
held~its first discussion on
the Israeli position for the
summit Aug. 20 but Begin
said that further talks will
take place Aug. 27. He said if
the Cabinet supports his
ideas for a "permanent
partial peace settlement" in
which Israel would have
peaceful relations with the
Arabs pending a formal
peace agreement he will pre-,
sent it to Carter and Sadat.
Begin said that the United

Dayan, speaking to a
forum at Kfar Hamaccabiah

Camp David with an open
mind and try to bridge the

guidelines'for the summit.
He said the Cabinet will have
to decide who will be jkh
eluded in the Israeli delegation but that he will propose
Deputy Premier Yigael
Yadin. The Cabinet is reportedly split with some behind Begin and Foreign
Ministe Moshe Dayan in
their support for Israel's original peace plan providing
self-rule for the Arabs on the
West Bank and the Gaza
Strip along with Begin's new
ideas for a partial settlement. Defense Minister Ezer
Weizman .believes Israel
should try to reach a
complete peace settlement,
especially if Sadat repeats
the views expressed to Weizman in Salzburg, Austria in
July. A third group on the
Cabinet want Begin to stick
to the original peace plan
turn to negotiation that
would lead to a peace agreement. But Dayan stressed
that a peace agreement
must include the right for the
Israeli army to guard the
security of the West Bank
and for Israelis to buy land
there and settle and travel in
the area. He said a solution
must be found for the West
Bank but it should not be annexed either by Israel or
Jordan. Former Premier
Yitzhak Rabin, who also appeared at the forum, urged
territorial compromise. But
he said he would not support
a return to the 1967 borders.
"Whoever supports such a
withdrawal encourages the
illusion in the' Arab world
that the day,will some when
it will be possible to
eliminate the Jewish State,"
Rabin said.
