Egyptian Rule Brings
Changes To El Arish
TEL AVIV (WNS)-Some
El   Arish   residents   have
found that the return of
Egyptian rule after 12 years
has not been the blessing
they had anticipated. Many
families-have been ejected
from apartments to make
"room for the Egyptian officers now quartered in the
Sinai town. There are also
reports that some El Arish
residents- have  been subjected to interrogation by the
-Egyptians on alleged colla-_
boration with the Israelis
and in some cases were physically abused. The Egyptians, ' meanwhile, have for
the time being, closed the
border around El Arish preventing workers from reaching their jobs in the laundry
that lies on the Israeli side of

Carter Says U.S. Will Not Submit

of State Cyrus Vance in his
remarks at Beersheba May
25 at the opening of autonomy .talks between Israel
and Egypt had "directly and
by implication" invited the
Palestine Liberation Organ-
- ization into the ' negotiations for autonomy. .It said
Vance's remarks were "ill-
conceived, unwarranted and
~a counterproductive intrusion ... that could severely
jeopardize the peace process."

Radio Free Europe broadcast an interview with Archbishop Valerian Trifa, who is
charged with'the murder of
Jews in Rumania in 1941.

Klarsfeld Says Elkanian Executed
Because He Was A Jew
TEL AVIV (WNS)-At a
midnight press conference
at Ben Gurion Airport May.
30, French lawyer. Serge
Klarsfeld declared that
Habib Elkanian, the former
leader of the Iranian Jewish
community was executed as
a Jew despite the denials of
the Iranian government.
Klarsfeld,- who spent several
days in Iran to investigate
the May 9 execution of
Elkanian and to intercede in
behalf of Jewish political prisoners there, flew to Israel
immediately after returning
to Paris May 30. He brought
with him a photo copy of the
charge sheet Used at Elkan-
ian's trial. He-noted that the
charge sheet opens with the
words: "Habib Elkanian,
Jew, Teheran born, spy, rich
and Zionist ... "He said
that these words indicate
that Elkanian was executed
for being a Jew and a Zionist. The charge sheet claims
that Elkanian was-a spy for
Israel, extorting money
from poor Iranians and giv
ing money to a "hostile country, Israel, which kills Arab
brethren." Klarsfeld said
that Elkanian's son and
daughter-in-law visited him
, at his Teheran hotel asking
that he help get them an exit
visa. Their home and property had been confiscated.
He said when he took the
matter up, with Iranian Jus-

ratify proposed changes and
amendments to the constitutions of both agencies. The
meeting will be held in the
Resler Wing of Heritage
House.
The purpose of the proposed amendments is to coordinate the administration
and services of Heritage
House and Heritage Tower.

the Columbus Jewish Community that will come about

Although some 2000 persons attended Sheikh Huzan-
' der's funeral June 2, public
figures, including A-Shawa,
were notably absent. The
mourners were chiefly members of his family, friends

Huzander was, in many
ways, a Palestinian militant.
He publicly declared his support of the Palestine Liberation Organization and its
claim to be the sole legitimate representative of the
Palestinian people. In the
pre-statehood period he was
a follower of Haj Amin el-
Husseini, the notorious^
Grand Mufti of Jerusalem,
who collaborated with the
Nazis.
He was a founder of the
anti-Israel Moslem Brothers,
organization in- the Gaza
Strip. Of his five sons, three
were active .members of
Palestinian terrorist organizations. One, a lieutenant
colonel in El Fatah, was
killed during a terrorist raid
on Nahariya in 1973. But
Sheikh Huzander,-while not ■
moderating his political
views, sought a modus
vivendi with Israel after the
1967 Six-Day War when the
Gaza Strip came under Is-
