ee Jews Among 52 Former Hostages
ces Last Friday Night
NEW YORK (JTA)-The
three Jews among the 52 former American hostages released from Iran last Tuesday received spiritual ministrations from a U.S. Air
Force chaplain who conducted their first Sabbath'sery-'
ices in over 14 months in
Wiesbaden, West Germany,
last Friday night. -
According to the National
Jewish Welfare Board in
New York, Rabbi Joel
Schwartzman, who is stationed at the Ramstein Air
Force Base, flew to Wiesbaden to meet the returnees.
The Jewish returnees are
Barry Rosen, 36, of Brooklyn, N.Y.; Jerry Plotkin, 45,
' of Sherman Oaks, Calif.; and
Malcolm Kalp; 42, of Fairfax, Va. Schwartzman described his meeting with
them in a telephone call to
Rabbi Joseph,'Messing,
director of the JWB's Armed
Forces, Veterans Services
and Jewish Chaplaincy corn-
articles on the Arab-Israeli
conflict.
He has been a frequent
commentator on national
and local television and
radio news programs. He
served as a special guest on
NBC's live telecast of Egyptian President Sadat's arrival at Ben Gurion Airport in
Israel in November 1977.
During the Camp David
Summit, he was interviewed
by Barbara Walters on the.
ABC evening news. He has
also appeared on ABC's
"Good Morning America,"
Public Broadcasting's
"McNeil-Lehrer Report"
and other programs.
Blitzer spent two weeks ui
Egypt in December 1$77,"
covering the first Israeli-
Egyptian peace conference.
.During his visit, he had a
chance to meet with leading
Egyptian governmental officials and other influential
Egyptians. In March 1979, he
accompanied President
Carter to Egypt and Israel
during the final round, of
negotiations which led to the
signing of the peace treaty.

missions, who sent him on
his mission.
His first act was to give the
three men the JWB's prayer
book and Bible, a necklace
with a Star of David and the'
JWB's. chaplaincy badge,
which also bears a Star of
David. "All three men are
wearing the JWB necklace
and Rosen is proudly wearing the chaplaincy badge,"
Schwartzman reported.
He joined a Protestant
, minister' and a Catholic
priest in an ecumenical serv-'
ice for all of the returnees
and conducted Friday night
services for Rosen, Plotkin
and Kalp and for Jewish
military personnel stationed
" in Wiesbaden.
Rosen, who was Press
Attache at the U.S. Embassy
. in Teheran when it was
seized by student revolutionaries Nov. 4, 1979, had
served with the Peace Corps
in Iran in the 1960s. The

The twelfth point of the
scout law says "A scout is
reverent." He is reverent toward G-d. He is faithful in
his religious duties and
respects the convictions of
others in matters of custom
and religion.
Scout Sabbath,., annually
sponsored by The- Jewish
Committee on Scouting, Central Ohio Council, will be
held on Friday, Feb. 13, at

St. at 8 p.m. Rabbi Harvey
Goldman will officiate.
The highlight of the program will be the presentation of the Aleph Award and
the Shofar Award. Cub
Scouts, Seth Andrew Rozen,
Pack 279, son of Mr. and
Mrs. Mel Rozen; and Jeffrey
A. Gutter, Pack 126, son of
Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Gutter will receive the Aleph
Awards.
This year's recipient of the
Shofar Award will be Marc
Lee Hall, Assistant Scoutmaster of Troop 126, Marc is
associated with Knolls Realty Co., Bexley.
This year is the Bar Mitzvah Year for WUliam "BUI"
Goldsmith who is serving as
chairman of The Jewish
Committee on Scouting with
the help of Co-chairman San-
ford Lichtenstein. The most
important goal of the committee is to identify and inspire the youth with eternal
value of Torah and Jewish
tradition.
On the 71st anniversary of
the Boy,Scouts of America,
Marc Lee Hall
Chairman Goldsmith said,
"I am grateful for the opportunity given me to make a
small contribution whose
main purpose is to provide a
foundation of wholesome-
ness ' and good citizenship
ferred to him as a "famous
spy and plotter."
Plotkin, a businessman on
his first trip outside the U.S.,
arrived in Teheran in October, 1979, seeking business
opportunities and chanced to
be in the U.S. Embassy when
it was seized. He was born in
New York and has lived in
California for the past 18
years.
Kalp's duties at the Embassy are unknown. The
militants accused him of
being a CIA agent. He had
served in Vietnam. He told
his brother by telephone
after landing at Wiesbaden
that because of repeated attempts to escape, he was
beaten by his captors, kept
in solitary confinement for
five months and denied mail
from home.
Many of the former hostages suffered maltreatment
at the hands of the Iranians
but none apparently was
singled out because of his
Jewish origin. Schwartzman, a Reform rabbi from
Cincinnati, is one of 55 Jewish chaplains stationed at
U.S. military, naval and air
bases all over the world, the
JWB said.
