s Right To Exist
ht To Homeland
PARIS,' (JTA)-President
Francois Mitterrand defined
France's dual policy in the
Middle East last week. He
said it calls for the recognition of Israel and the
means to defend itself but
also recognition of the Palestinians and their right to a
homeland with, eventually,
state structures.
Interviewed on television,
Mitterrand acknowledged
that "we risk (by this
policy), being misunderstood by both sides. But
there is also a good chance
that both sides will understand us and approve
France's position," he said.
•The French President who
is scheduled to go to Israel
Feb. 10—the first French
head of state to visit that
country—declared, "I shall
say in Jerusalem what I
have said in Riyadh," a
reference to his recent trip to
Saudi Arabian "The main
- thing is that France now invariably says the same" to
all parties.
This was seen as meaning
' that during his forthcoming
visit to Israel he will press
for Palestinian self-determination, as he did in Amman, Algiers and Riyadh,
but will also uphold Israel's
right to independence and
security.
In his interview last night,
Mitterrand said: "Israel has
the right to exist... One cannot refuse it the means to
that existence. It needs
security, secure frontiers.
Its rights have to be recognized. But in the same way, I
will say to my Israeli
friends: You must recognize
the right to existence of the
Palestinian people."
Mitterrand said the nature
of a Palestinian homeland
was a matter to be determined by negotiations between the parties concerned
and France is not a negotiator. He observed, however, "How can you, without

To Working "together For Gmimm §@oS
Over 1300 members of Columbus Jewry participated in one of the largest gatherings of
the Jewish community in recent years. The Columbus Jewish Federation's Dec. 13 "Spirit
of '82" celebration, which was held at the Aladdin Temple last Sunday, kicked-off the 1982
campaign activities for Federation.
The theme of the event encouraged a strong family commitment, according to Melvin
Schottenstein, General Campaign Chairman for the 1982 CJF campaign. The Temple was
decorated with red, white and blue balloons and red flowers which enhanced the festive
atmosphere of the day.
Lawrence Schaffer, Chairman of the "SpiriLpf '82" planning committee explained that
the celebration brought together the young and "older members of the Columbus Jewish
Community in a binding, warm and spirited togetherness for the benefit of each and every-;
one of them and world Jewry. "" ' ".'.'"
O.S.U. Coach Earle Bruce delivered an inspiring "halftim'e" message encouraging the
community to participate in the campaign, and to make a commitment to work together-; -
for the common goal of improving Jewish life in Columbus and worldwide. O.S.U. tight
end, John Frank also spoke echoing Coach Bruce"s eloquent words.
The well-planned and organized event was also highlighted by the surprise appearance
of the O.S.U. Pep Band and drum major, the Shiron Singers, the Columbus Symphony,
Youth Orchestra, Israeli Rock Band, agency booths, a media show byCinemjigie Corpora-
tion and a delightful Kosher box brunch.
