Holocaust Conference
Set For April 18
At Jewish Center
-Rev. John T. Pawlikowski
of the University of Chicago
, will be the keynote speaker
at the communitywide Conference on the Holocaust,
Sunday, April 18 beginning
at 1 p.m. at the Jewish
Center of Columbus. The
Conference is a special program under the sponsorship
of the Columbus Jewish
Federation., CRC, Jewish
Center of Columbus, Columbus Board of Rabbis and the
Ohio-Kentucky-Indiana
Regional Office of the ADL.

Conference as well.
Rev. Pawlikowski will
open the Conference on the
Holocause by addressing the
Conference's theme:
"Teaching The- Holocaust:
From Generation To Generation." Following Pawlikow-
ski's presentation more than
ten simultaneous discussion
groups will be held on a
variety of topics associated
with the theme. Each discussion group will be moderated
by local educators, profes-^
sors, community professionals and rabbis. In addition, several exhibits about
the Holocaust will be displayed and a special program developed for children
will be devoted to the theme.
Rev. John Pawlikowski is
a professor of Social Ethics
at the Catholic Theological
Union at the University of
Chicago.
Pawlikowski's concern for
the Holocaust and its meaning led'to his appointment by
President Carter to the
United States Holocaust
.Memorial Council in 1980; a
position he continues to hold
in the present administration..

Foreign Minister Yitzhak
Shamir called on "France
and the West" last week to
help Lebanon free itself from
the shackles of occupation
by Syria and the Palestine
Liberation Organization.
Shamir, addressing visiting '
French paratroopers, said
the Lebanese wanted to
■ reassert their independence '
but the presence in their
country of 30,000 Syrian
troops and 26,000 PLO terrorists effectively prevents
this. .
Israeli army sources,
meanwhile, confirmed a
report in Haaretz that Syrian'
troops have moved into the
ruins of the.Beaufort Castle,
an ancient Crusaders for-
northern Sinai in the wake of

Recently, the concrete floors
of the main level, upper level
and running track were
poured.
The running track, which .
is suspended above the gymnasium, is one of the highlights of the New Building.
The concrete base of the
track will later be covered
with a synthetic material
making the banked track an
ideal running area. At one-
twelfth of a mile in circumference, it will be one of the
largest - indoor running
tracks in the city.
The Early Childhood Wing
has received its covering of
exterior Isrick  and   the
plumbing has been installed
in each classroom. •
Installation of the"-building's roof will begin mid-
March and should be completed in six. to eight weeks.
As the weather turns
warmer, thoughts turn to
summer activities. Norman
Altman III of the Altman
Co., general contractors, has
stated that his company is
doing everything possible to
assure that Center members
will be able to enjoy the new
pool this summer. "As soon
as the ground thaws, work
will begin to put the pool in
place," said Altman.
A grand opening of the entire facility should be held in
November or December of
this year.

Syrian Troops Occupy
Beaufort Castle
The Syrian occupation of
, the Beaufort Castle on the
northern bank of the Litani
River," brings their troops
closer-to the so-called "red
line" limit than ever before.
The "red-line" is the position
in south Lebanon beyond
which Israel has said it
would not permit the Syrians
to operate.
The Beaufort Castle has
. been bombed and shelled to
rubble by  Israel and  the
Israel-backed, Christian
militia in southern Lebanon.
But it has been used as a
PLO artillery site and observation post commanding
a direct line of sight over
northern Israel. The United
Nations  Interim  Force  in
Lebanon ,(UNIFIL)   stationed small observer Units
in the ruins in, the past but
they left some time ago because of shelling by both
sides. A UNIFIL unit was to
have   returned   there   this
week. "■'■,
Meanwhile, President
Reagan's special envoy,
Philip Habib, left Beirut to
return to,Washington after
two weeks in the region
attempting to reduce tensions and preserve the
cease-fire along the Israeli-
Lebanese border. During his
stay, Habib visited Israel,
Syria, Jordan, Saudi Arabia
and Lebanon. He had a final
meeting with Lebanon's
President Elias Sarkis before his-departure.
Lawmaker Urges Reagan To Revoke Appointment
Because Of Ties To Convicted War Criminal
BONN (JTA)—The city of Hamburg has announced plans
to erect a memorial to the poet Hefnrich Heine to replace the
one destroyed by the Nazis because of Heine's Jewish origin.
WASHINGTON (JTA)-
Rep. Tom Lantos (D. Calif.) >
has urged President Reagan
to revoke his appointment of
J. Peter Grace, a prominent
New York industrialist, who '
has been named chairman of
a Presidential study group,
because of Grace's close ties
to a convicted Nazi war
criminal.    .
Grace, president and chief
executive officer of W.R.
Grace & Co., was appointed
last week as chairman of the
Private Sector Survey on '
Cost Control in Federal
Government. Both, Grace
and his corporation, an international chemical - concern,
have confirmed ties with
Otto Ambros who was a
director of the I.G. Farben
Chemical Co. in Germany
during World War II and is
now a consultant to W.R..
Grace.
For his role in establishing
a Farben works! at Auschwitz, Ambros was con;
victed in Nuremberg of
slavery and mass murder.
He was sentenced to eight
years • imprisonment but
served less than three years
and was reportedly helped
by Grace to enter the U.S.
Calls For Immediate,
,    Decisive Action
Lantos sent a telegram to
Reagan last week in which
he stated: "Having shared
with you in the White House
a most sombre ceremony
remembering the nightmare
of the Holocaust; having
belief in your fundamental
decency in your commitment to human rights, it is
inconceivable to me that you
could have known of Mr.
Peter Grace's close ties to
the convicted mass murderer, Otto Ambros."
Lantos urged Reagan's
"immediate and decisive action" to revoke the appointment of Grace, "coupled
with the issuing of an appropriate statement."- The
White House had no comment oh the charges made
by Lantos. But a White
House spokesman noted "that
the post to which Grace was
named was voluntary and
Grace will receive no pay.
Last June, Yeshiva University in New York was
about to present Grace with
its distinguished service
award. It was withdrawn
after protests were made
over Grace's connections
with Ambros.
