German Town Hosts Holocaust Survivors BONN (JTA) — A handful of surviving Jews who once lived in the north German town of Jever, returned there on a visit last month at the invitation of the town authorities who paid all expenses, including air fare from far-dff places. Such projects are not uncommon in West Germany, where Jews who fled the Nazis between 1933-1945 or survived the concentration camps and later moved abroad are invited to re-visit their native towns, all expenses paid. , Archbishop Of Milan Pleads For Purging Of Anti-Semitism From Theological Literature ROME (JTA)—Cardinal Carlo Maria Martini, trie Archbishop of Milan, delivered an impassioned plea for the purging of anti-Semitism from theological literature, for promoting deeper Christian understanding of Jewish religion, culture and tradition and for Jews and Christians to join in dialogue with people of other faiths, notably Moslem. The Cardinal spoke last week to some 200 Christians and Jews from all over Europe, including the Eastern Bloc, assembled at Vallombroso, near Florence, for a colloquium, "1984 and Beyond: Purpose and Strategy in Jewish-Christian Relations." Anti-Semitism Problem For Argentine Jews BUENOS AIRES (JTA) — Anti-Semitism in some of its ugliest manifestations remains a grave problem for Argentine Jewry even though the military junta has been replaced by a. democratic regime sympathetic to Jewish concerns, according to Sion Cohen Imach, president of DAIA, the representative body of the Argentine Jewish community. "The centers of anti-Semitism, remain intact" but what has changed is the attitude of the government whose feelings with respect to the Jewish community are above suspicion, Cohen Imach told a luncheon attended by the heads of the country's principal Jewish organizations. State Dept. Charged With Sabotaging Efforts To Deport Nazi War Criminals NEW YORK (JTA)-A senior official of the World Jewish Congress has cited a report by the Judiciary Com- ■•■ mittee of the House of Representatives in charging that the State Department "was . engaged in a deliberate and callous policy of sabotaging efforts to deport convicted Nazi war criminals from this country." Kalman Sultanik, a vice president of the WJC, said he "was shocked" to find that the House Judiciary Committee had in its report confirmed the allegations that the State Department was actively undermining the work,of the Justice Department's Office of Special Investigations, the agency charged with acting against Nazi war criminals living in the United States. - Sultanik siad he was also speaking on behalf of the United States Holocaust Memorial Council, to which he was appointed by President Carter in 1980 and subsequently named chairman of its anti-Semitism Commission. The chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, Rep. Peter Rodino, Jr. (D.N.J.) states in his report on appropriations to the Justice De partment for the coming year that the committee is "deeply concerned about efforts by the State Department to assist the Justice Department in "the deportation of war criminals," adding that the State Department has been "unwilling to (CONTINUED ON PAGE 12) Ohio Republicans Support Israel Gordon Zacks To Be Guest Speaker At Columbus Jewish Foundation Dinner Gordon B. Zacks will be the guest speaker at the Fourth Annual Dinner Institute of the Columbus Jewish Foundation on Wednesday, July 25. His theme will be "Impacting on Jewish Life — 1984-2001" and will be the basis for the participatory workshop that will follow aimed at determining the programs and priorities of the Foundation for the next 17'years. "Gordon Zacks is an astute observer of Jewish life, a critical thinker, a philosopher and a highly dedicated worker. He will provide the background, offer some of the challenges and set the tone for our unique participatory workshop," said Judith Swedlow, chairwoman. Zacks' role in the Jewish community locally, nationally and overseas nas been very strong. He is a member of the Center for Strategic and International Studies, Haifa University; American Friends of Hebrew University; American Friends of Jerusalem Academy and Conference Center; American Friends of Tel Aviv University; American Israel Public Affairs Committee; American Jewish Committee; Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds; Melton Research Center; National Jewish Conference Center and North American Jewish Students' Appeal. Zacks has (raveled to over 60 countries throughout the world and made over 30 trips (CONTINUED ON PAGE 13) The Ohio Republican Delegation to the Party's National Convention, meeting in Columbus, July 14, overwhelmingly adopted a strong resolution offered by Columbus Mayor Dana G. "Buck" Rinehart to maintain fully the alliance of Israel and the United States under President Reagan. Mayor Rinehart, a statewide at-large delegate, said he wanted the Republican platform to be "unequivo- cable in its endorsement of continuity and enhancement of the strong strategic relationship that has been advanced between the U.S. and the State of Israel under the policies of this Administration." The mayor said he heard from Republicans and Independents and supportive Democrats on this subject and was pleased to report that this was the single platform policy adopted by the Ohio Delegation. Ohio has 178 delegates and alternate delegates to the National Convention fn August in Dallas, including Merom Brachman from the, 12th Congressional District' of Columbus. He said this Rinehart Resolution presented by Ohio Republican Chairman Michael F. Colley Mayor Dana Rinehart would be recommended by the delegation to the Republican Platform Committee meeting in Dallas the week before the convention. Mayor Rinehart's Resolution was adopted as follows: In the words of President Reagan, "Israel and the United States are close allies in the defense of freedom in the Middle East and any effort to weaken Israel would only destabilize the region and risk the peace of the world." Secretary of De^ fense Casper Weinberger has said it is Israel that stands "determinedly in the way of Soviets who would dearly love control over the strategic choke points in the Middle East."
