AJC Launches
New Program
NEW YORK (JTA)-The
American Jewish Committee has announced a yearlong program to mark the
historic changes in Catholic-
Jewish relations initiated by
Vatican Council II 20 years
ago.
Rabbi A. James Rudin, national interreligious affairs
director of the AJCommit-
tee, stressed that the purpose of the program, which
began officially two weeks
ago, was "not to be an exercise in nostalgia but rather
to deepen and strengthen
mutual understanding between Christians and Jews."
He called it "the most extensive program of Catholic-
Jewish relations ever undertaken in the United States."
"Vatican II provided the
catalyst and we must con->
tinue to build on it," Rudin
said. Vatic .n Council II, convened b> the late Pope John
XXIII iro-i 1962-65, is considered ;. turning point in

Author Sees Holocaust
As Christian Tragedy
NEW YORK (JTA) -
Prof. David Wyman, author
of The Abandonment of the
Jews, which documents the
"criminal negligence" of the
U.S. toward the rescue of
European Jews during the
Holocaust — said that the
Holocaust "is still not perceived by non-Jews as their
issue — or their loss."
Wyman was interviewed
by the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency at WNET-Channel 13
here before a taping of "Why
in the World," a program in
which a group of teenagers
question leading figures. He
said that the four years of
writing the book — preceded
by 11 of research in 60 archives — were "agony. I had
to come face to face* with
(the Holocaust) and I began
to cry for the first time in my
adult life."
Wyman said that when he
first became aware of the
Holocaust it became clear to
him that "it was a Christian
tragedy as much as a Jewish
tragedy. It was Christians
who perpetrated it — the
Nazis who were the product
of Western Christian civilization and those Christians
in the U.S. and Britain who
