Guatemalan Jew Running For Vice President
~ GUATEMALA CITY (JTA) — A prominent member of the
Jewish community here is a chief contender for the office of
Vice President in the Nov. 3 elections to be held in Guatemala, the World Jewish Congress reported. Dr. Julio Benjamin Sultan is a physician and a very active politician who
served a term as Minister of Public Health from 1974-1978.

Will Resume Diplomatic Ties with Israel
LONDON (JTA) — Ivory Coast's President, Felix Hou-
phouet-Boigny, indicated that the resumption of full diplomatic relations between the Black African country and Israel
was near, the World Jewish Congress reported here. WJC
monitoring sources said that a broadcast from the Ivory
Coast cited remarks by Houphouet-Boigny who said that the
restoration of diplomatic ties between the two countries "was
now only a matter of technicalities." -
Longtime Refusenik Arrives In Israel
TEL AVIV (WNS) — Mark Nashpitz, who had repeatedly
been refused permission to leave the Soviet Union for some 14
years, five of them spent in Siberia; arrived in Israel recently. He said the first thing he wanted to do was to taste his
mother's gefilte fish. Nashpitz, 37, had been told some weeks
ago that he would never get an exit visa. But on Oct. 18 he
was suddenly informed that he, his wife Ludmilla and their
five-year-old son Benjamin had to leave the Soviet Union
within 48 hours. They left Moscow for Vienna the morning of
Oct. 21 and'arrived at Ben Gurion airport the same night, to
be met by his father and mother, who came to Israel some
years ago —- the father after defecting while on a mission with
a delegation to Denmark 29 years ago, when Mark was eight,
and brothers and sisters he has never, seen before.
NEW YORK (JTA) - Israeli Premier Shimon Peres
expressed satisfaction last
week with King Hussein's
initial reaction to his peace
proposals promulgated at
the United Nations General
Assembly. Appearing on
ABC-TV's "Good Morning
America" program, Peres
termed the Jordanian king's
response, as reported in The
New York Times, "constructive" and "encouraging."
In an interview with the
Times,- Hussein said in Amman: "I believe his (Peres')
speech represents the beginning of movement in the
right direction and reflects
personal concern for the fate
of future generations and a
determination to contribute
towards the achievement of
peace in our time." Continuing, Hussein said:
"I hope it is the beginning
of a realization of what is required for the establishment
of a just and durable, peace,
in other words, rapid movement towards the convening
of an international conference with, th« <gairticipation
Nov. 23 'Share The Feeling' Gala Planned
"Share the Feeling," a
Gala on behalf of the 1986
United Jewish Fund Campaign, will take place on
Saturday evening, Nov. 23 at
th^ newly restored Great
Southern Hotel. Dennis Mellman, Columbus Jewish Federation's 1986 General Chairman announced that this
first-time event will herald a
new concept in honoring the
spirit of leadership and commitment to the 1986 Campaign. "The Gala," Mellman
said, "represents an attempt
to reach out to a broader segment of the community and
invite them to 'Share the
Feeling* of the Campaign,
which this year has a goal of
$5.4 million."
Gary Cheses, Chairman of
the Gala, remarked that the
affair will be the "premier
social event in the Jewish
community for 1985-86." The
black tie evening will- begin
with cocktails - and hors
d'oeuvres at 6:30 p.m. in the
Great Southern lobby followed by a full course

European Parliament
Supports Peace Plan
STRASBOURG (JTA) -
The European Parliament
voted last week to back
"with all its available
means" Israeli Prime Minister Shimon Peres' peace
plan. The Parliament, which
represents the ten European
Economic Community member-states, also called on
Jordan to heed the Israeli
Premier's calls.
The resolution, proposed
,.by.,.the„S.ocialist group and
backed by the Italian Communists, also called for the
recognition of the Palestine
Liberation Organization as
the representative of the
Palestinian people and said
it should take part in the
Middle East peace process.
The resolution was adopted
by a show of hands without
an actual vote count.
The European Parliament, elected by the ten
EEE member-states directly, has only a consultative
status.

Feeling Planning Committee" include: Victor ancl

The cost of the evening is
$60 per person. Seating is
limited to the first 250 reservations. The committee recommends that responses be
returned early; the deadline
is Nov. 11.
While there will be no formal solicitation at the Gala,
the minimum commitment
for attendance is $5,000.
B'nai B'rith Maccabee
Lodge #2848 is in the midst of
a membership drive with ten
new members recently enrolled. The Lodge has set a'
goal of 25 percent increase in
membership for the year
1985-86, according to Ely
Zofan, membership vice
president.
Maccabee Lodge was
awarded, two years ago, recognition as the best men's
lodge in North America and
is under consideration for
the same award for 1984-85.
Community involvement in
programs such as Christmas
Eve "Feed The Police,"
Heritage House and Veteran's Hospital outings, a Children's Hospital Halloween
Party, and providing Passover seder meals for the
Jewish needy helped Maccabee earn these-honors. .

state of war, Hussein continued, would be the "crowning
achievement of a peace effort under the right auspices
— an international confer-,
ence, dealing with all aspects of the problem, in particular, the Palestinian
dimension and Palestinian
rights," to "implement Security Council Resolutions
242 and 338." He repeated his
insistence that the two
superpowers as well as the
Palestinians "and their
legitimate representatives"
would have to participate in
such a conference.
The King also said that he
remained committed to his
Feb. 11 accord with the PLO

lauded last week both the
peace proposal put forward
by Israeli Prime Minister
Shimon Peres and the qualified praise it received from
Jordan's King Hussein.
At the same time, the Administration acknowledged

Murray Baumgarten, Professor of English and Comparative Literature at the
University of California,
Santa Cruz, will give a lecture, "Grace Paley and Other
Jewish Women Writers,"
Monday, Nov. 4, at 4 p.m. in
347 University Hall (the
Philosophy Lounge) on The
Ohio State University
campus.
Professor Baumgarten is
concerned with the modern
versions of ancient sources
and stories. He has published on the novel and lyric
poetry in comparative perspective. His book, City
Scriptures: Modern Jewish
Writing, recently published
by the Harvard University
Press, deals with writers
from Sholom Aleichem to
Saul Bellow and urban settings from Brooklyn to Jerusalem.
Grace Paley is a well
known short-story writer.
Her collections include The
Little Disturbances of Man
and Enormous Changes at
the Last Minute. Her work
frequently appears in The
New Yorker; her "urban setting" is New York City.
The lecture is sponsored
by Ohio State's Melton Center for Jewish Studies, Department , of English, and
