'Flight Of The Golden Peacock'
Celebrates Richness Of Yiddish

perform in "The Flight of
the Golden Peacock" March
30 at 2 p.m. in the Roth/Resler Theatre of the Leo Yassenoff Jewish Center; The
program, performed in Yiddish and English, will be a -'

[lr Yiddish story arid song.
M- The format for "The
Flight of the Golden
Peacock" is designed for
audiences which have no
knowledge of Yiddish as well
as those with an extensive
knowledge of the language.
First a piece of literature is
read in English and then
again in Yiddish, allowing
for the richness of the language to add a new dimension to the work. "We have a
dual goal: appreciation of
the lesser known Yiddish
writers and the actual hear-
ing of the Yiddish
h language," said Wolf.
"The roll call of distinguished writers in Yiddish is
much larger than Sholom
Aleichem, Sholom Asch and
Issac Basevis Singer. We
work with writings by
Yankev Glatstein, Itzik
Manger, Kadya Molodowski
and Dovid Bergelson, just to
name a few," continued
Wolf.
In addition to being director of the Golden Peacock
series, Wolf is a novelist,
poet and translator of Yiddish poetry and fiction. The
author of several books; he
teaches at the''Max Wein-
reich Center for Advanced
Jewish Studies and the New
School of Social Research,

experience on and off Broadway. For the last several
years, she has been a major

NEW YORK (WNS) —
Former United Nations Secretary General Kurt Waldheim served on the staff, of a
German army general in
1943 who was, described as
"perhaps more implicated in
Jewish deportations than
any other Wehrmacht commander," the World Jewish
Congress revealed recently.
The documents follow the
disclosure in Vienna that
Waldheim, now a conservative candidate for the Presidency of Austria, had an
active Nazi past. Documents
published in Vienna show.
Waldheim in his youth as a
member of the Nazi SA and
the National Socialist Student Organization.
Waldheim had denied
membership in either but
later conceded that he had in
fact joined the groups in
order to protect his family.
Waldheim's association with
the SA was in his pursuit of
horseback riding. The records of Waldheim's de-Nazi-
fication process in 1946 confirmed that his association
with the SA was solely in

. This event, culminating
the fund drive for the Hadassah Medical Organization in
Israel, promises to surpass
the event of last year, when

comedy revue, was the entertainment of the evening.
"The best gets better,"
stated Helen Nutis, donor
chairwoman, "and we are
proud to give this culminating event for the many

The WJC documents disclose that Waldheim served
on Gene Alexander Loehr's
staff at Salonika, Greece, in
March, 1943, when at the
same time Wehrmacht
trains were carrying
2,000-2,500 Jews to Auschwitz
nearly every day. Waldheim
has denied knowing of any
deportations.
"I regret these things most
deeply, but I have to repeat
that it is really the first time
that I hear such things happened," Waldheim told The
New York Times. "I never
heard or learned anything of
this while I was there. I hear
for the first time that there
were deportations of Jews
from there."
According to the WJC, documents and testimony at the
Nuremberg trials established that Loehr arid personnel under his command
supervised the 1943 deportations, to Auschwitz of the
large Jewish community in
Salonika. The operation,
conducted with SS assistance, began in mid-March
1943 and was largely over by
mid-May, by which time
more than 42,000 men,
women and children had
been transported to Poland,
where most were gassed
shortly after arrival at the
death camp. Loehr was subsequently hanged as a war
criminal.
Meanwhile, in a report
from Athens, Joseph Low-
inger, head of Greece's Jewish community, expressed
surprise and disbelief over
allegations that Kurt Waldheim participated in the deportation of 42,000 Jews from
Salonika to Nazi death
camps in Poland in 1943,
when the future United Nations Secretary General was
an officer in the Wehrmacht. ■
Lowinger, president of the
Central Jewish Council, the
representative body of
Greek Jews, was referring to
media reports in the United
States that Waldheim was in
Salonika, where most of
Greece's 70,000 Jews lived
during World War II, while
the deportations were being
carried out.
"It is the first time that I
have learned that Dr. Waldheim was in Thessalonikil
(Salonika) and that he com-

Nissim said his Ministry is
engaged in a concerted effort to gather all available
information on other alleged
-war criminals residing in the
U.S. But Israel has not asked
for'their extradition because
there is presently not enough
evidence to convict them,
Nissim said.
Demjanjuk, 65, has been
confined to an isolation cell

Jews.
"How come the famous
Austrian Nazi-hunter Simon
Wiesenthal does not know
about Waldheim?" Lowinger asked.
Waldheim's denial was
supported by Wiesenthal,
who heads the Vienna-based
Nazi war crimes documentation center. He said that he
had heard rumors of Waldheim's involvement with
'Nazis before. But neither the
