Three Jews Appointed
To Costa Rica's Cabinet
SAN JOSE (JTA) — The new President, Dr. Oscar Arias
Sanchez, who takes office May 15, has appointed three members of the Jewish community, all women, as Deputies to key
Cabinet offices. They are: Ophelia Rubinstein, Housing;
Sandra Pisk, Planning; and Rebecca Grynspan,( Treasury.
Wiesel Reappointed To Panel
WASHINGTON (JTA) - Elie Wiesel, author and lecturer,
will be appointed to a second term as the head of the United
States Holocaust Memorial Council, the White House announced last week. The announcement, issued during President Reagan's visit to Tokyo for the economic summit, came
almost a year after Reagan visited the West German military cemetery in Bitburg where members of the Waffen SS
are buried. Wiesel decried the President's visit there.
Peres Vows To Bring Nudel 'Home'
JERUSALEM (JTA) — Premier Shimon Peres sent a special message to Ida Nudel on the occasion of her 55th birthday in which he vowed that "we shall neither rest nor be silent until we have brought her home." Nudel, an aliya activist known as the "guardian angel" of the Soviet Jewry
movement, lives in enforced isolation in Bendery, Soviet Moldavia. She served four years of Siberian exile for publicly
campaigning for Jewish emigration rights. She herself first
applied to emigrate in 1971 to be reunited with her sister,
liana Fridman, in Israel.

Rabbi Abner Weiss Selected By Hillel As
Rabbi Harry Kaplan Scholar-ln-Residence
The B'nai B'rith Hillel
Foundation at The Ohio
State University announces
that Rabbi Dr. Abner Weiss
is the 1986 Rabbi Harry Kaplan Scholar-in-Residence.
This annual event was initiated by friends of the late
Rabbi Harry Kaplan, who
served as director of the
O.S.U.'s Hillel from 1935 to
1969. According to Rabbi
Alan Ciner, this year's chairman, "An outstanding
scholar in Judaic studies has
been invited to our community for lectures, seminars
and discussions with students, faculty and the community."
Rabbi Weiss is currently
the rabbi of Beth Jacob Congregation in Beverly Hills,
Calif. He, is from Johannesburg, South Africa. He received a graduate degree
from Bet Midrash Le-Rab-
bonim in Johannesberg and
was ordained from Yeshivat
Keren B'Yavne in Israel. Dr.
Weiss got his B.A. from the
University of Witwaters-
rand, Johannesburg by special permission of the academic senate with four full
majors in English literature,
Hebrew language and literature, world history and psychology. He received his
M.A. from Yeshiva University as well as his Ph.D. His
dissertion was "Human
Nature and Morality in the
Writings of Rabbi Loew of
Prague."
Prior to his duties • in
Beverly Hills,, Rabbi Weiss
Was the rabbi of the Riverdale Jewish Center, in Riverdale, N.Y., from 1977 to 1985.
From 1969-1976, he was the
chief minister of the Durban
United Hebrew Congregation in Durban, South Africa.
From 1970 to 1976, Dr. Weiss
had beeita full professor and
head of the Department of
Hebrew and Jewish Studies,
University of Natal, Durban.
He is currently an adjunct
professor of philosophy in
the Division of Jewish
Studies, Yeshiva University.

Sculpture Show.
Sculpture at Heritage Village directly benefits the

the Village campus, all proceeds from the sale of sculpture and the upcoming Gala
are applied to the Auxiliary's $83,000 pledge towards
the Heritage House "We Are

NEW YORK (JTA) -
Former Soviet Jewish Prisoner of Conscience Anatoly
Shcharansky arrived in the
United States last week for
the beginning of a ten-day
visit which includes a meeting with President Reagan in
Washington and an appearance at the 15th annual Solidarity Sunday rally for
Soviet Jewry here.
"I'm going to speak out
about those I left behind me
in Russia," Shcharansky.
told-reporters at a news conference after arriving at
Kennedy International Airport, referring to the more
than 20,000 Jews who have
been refused permission to
emigrate and the some
400,000 who haye begun the
emigration process and seek
. to leave the Soviet Union.

of trust" needed between the
two superpowers;to facilitate
increased emigration can be
achieved by the Soviet
Union's adherence to its
human rights commitments,

"The Helsinki Accord is a
very good example of an
agreement which was signed
but was never fulfilled in the
Soviet Union," he said.

Feb. 11 from the Soviet
Union, where he served nine
years of a 13-year prison sen-
tance for alleged jtreason and
anti-Soviet propaganda. His
