South Korean Firms Boycott Israel
NEW YORK (JTA) — A number of major South Korean
companies refuse to sell their products to Israel, apparently
because of pressure from the Arab states, according to "Boycott Report,'* published by the American Jewish Congress.
The report named the following Korean companies: Kumbo
and Hancock, which manufactures tires; KiaHanda, Suzuki-
Korea, Hyongsung and Yamaha, which manufacture
motorcycles, and Hyundai and Daewood, manufacturers of
automobiles. Hyundai currently sells 150,000 cars a year in
the U.S. and Canada, the report said; In connection with
those companies' refusal to do business with Israel, the "Report!' cited a recent article by the Korean Ambassador to the
US., Kyung-Won-Kim, in The Washington Post in which he
said his country believes in and supports free trade.
U.S. Scientist Is Wolf Prize Winner
TEL AVIV (JTA) — An American plant pathologist, Dr.
Theodor Diener, will be this year's recipient of the Wolf
Foundation's $100,000 prize for agriculture, the Education
Ministry announced last week. Diener will be cited "for his
discovery and pioneering fundamental research on viroids,
the smallest subviral pathogens, and his applied work on
viroid detection in crops." Diener was born in Zurich in 1921
and educated in Switzerland. He has been a pathologist at the
Plant Protection Institute of the U.S. Agricultural Research
Service in Beltsville, Md., since 1959.
Human Rights Activist Believes Mikhail Gorbachev
Conducting Human Rights Offensive In Soviet Union
By Michael Solomon
MONTREAL (JTA) -
McGill University law professor Irwin Cotler, an internationally known human
rights activist, believes the
Soviet Union is presently
conducting "a human rights
offensive magisterially
organized by Mikhail Gorbachev" but signifying little
or no change in human rights
policies, including the
emigration of Soviet Jews.
In an exclusive interview
with the Jewish Telegraphic
Agency here, Cotler described his confrontation with
two ranking Soviet officials
at the recent Vienna review
conference on the Helsinki
Accords. He also provided a
six-point litmus test to determine whether recent Soviet
statements and acts are a
smokescreen or an earnest
move to improve human
rights for Soviet citizens.
In Cotler's opinion there is
a public relations offensive
characterized by the release
of high profile refuseniks
and dissidents such as Andrei Sakharov. and his wife,
Yelena Bonner, from internal exile in the closed city of
Gorky.
Unprecedented Facets Of
The Offensive
Other facets of the offensive which Cotler called "unprecedented in Soviet
Blank and Talis Assure Community
SUPER SUNDAY To Be Exciting Day
"We have received many
inquiries about this year's
special s SUPER SUNDAY
program," said Ruth Ann'
Blank, chairwoman. "We
want to assure the community that this will be an exciting and spirited day."
Ruth Ann Blank
"The success of the day
will be determined by community support of the campaign during the phone-a-
thon and a huge turn-out at
the Funday," added Mike
Talis, co-chairman:
Blank and Talis were
referring to the Columbus
Jewish Federation's SUPER
SUNDAY event on Jan. 18.
The daylong event will be
headquartered at the Leo
Yassenoff Jewish Center.
Below are a sampling of
the questions and Blank's
and talis' responses:
• You are calling it SUPER
SUNDAY Phone and Funday. What does that mean?
"The Phone-a-thon, our
seventh -annual, will begin
at 9 a.m. with (3) two hour
shifts in the early part of
the day: 9-11 a.m.; 10:30
a.m.-12:30 p.m.; 12 p.m.-2
p.m. and one in the evening
6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. The
phoning volunteers will be
calling on behalf of the 1987
United Jewish Fund Campaign."
• What about this Funday?
Funday, which is being
co-sponsored by the
Federation and the Center,
will be a community day
for families and people of
all ages. There is a Coney-
Island style theme and we
are having informational
games with prizes sponsored by community agencies, synagogues and
organizations; entertainment for adults and for
children, with clowns,
magicians, face-painting,
balloon sculpturing and a
tour of the Brighton Beach
Memoirs set in the theatre.
• Is it true that there is going
to be sand?
It's true — and we are
even guaranteeing fun and
internal sunshine! Plus, we
are giving a free beach ball
to the first 300 children.
Mike Talis
Will there be food at the
Funday?
The Funday will be held
from 12:30 p.m.-3:30 p.m.
and sidewalk vendors will
be selling coneys, chili,
corn-on-the-cob in keeping
with the Coney-Island
beach-like theme.
> Can J participate in Funday without being a phone
volunteer?
By all means — we want
everyone in the community

history" are the numerous
articles in the Soviet press
denouncing the conviction of
innocent people; the enactment of new emigration
statutes — the first codification of emigration regula-'
tions; and Gorbachev's new,
seemingly open style of
diplomacy.
It also consists of a willingness to discuss the cases
.of dissidents and acknowledgment of past mistakes,,
Cotler said.
"I came to the conclusion
after five-and-a-half hours of
talks with Yuri Kashlev, ambassador and head of the
Soviet delegation (at the
Vienna conference), and
. Vladimir Morozov, senior
spokesman of the Foreign
Ministry, that we were confronted by a human rights offensive of unsurpassed
magnitude," Cotler told the
JTA.

Shamir Accepts Peretz's Resignation
JERUSALEM (JTA) - Interior Minister Yitzhak
Peretz formally submitted
his resignation to Premier
Yitzhak Shamir at last Sunday's Cabinet meeting and it
..was accepted with regret. It
took effect within 48 hours.
Peretz, who heads the
ultra-Orthodox Shas Party,
quit rather than comply with
a Supreme Court order to
register as a Jew Shoshana
Miller, a recent Iihrnigrarit
from the U.S. who was converted to Judaism by an
American Reform rabbi. His
departure from the Cabinet
is not expected to lead to the
defection of Shas, which has
four Knesset seats, from the
unity coalition government.
No Replacement For
Peretz Announced
No replacement for Peretz
has been announced. The Interior Ministry is traditionally headed by a member of
an Orthodox political party.
The Orthodox rabbinate
refuses to recognize conversions performed abroad by
non-Orthodox rabbis. Only
Orthodox rabbis are permitted to perform conversions
in Israel.
Miller was converted four
years ago by Rabbi David
Klein, a Reform rabbi of Colorado Springs, Colo. She immigrated to Israel a year
ago and appealed to the
Supreme Court after the Interior Ministry refused to
register her as a Jew, thus
denying her automatic
citizenship.
The Supreme Court ruling
last month precipitated a
crisis in Orthodox circles.
Miller must be given status
as a Jew which, in effect,
recognizes Reform conver
sion as valid in Israel.
Miller Regrets The
Controversy
Miller herself is presently
in the U.S. caring for her
widowed father who is
Vatican Says
Prerequisites
Remain Same
ROME < JTA) — The Vatican is taking pains to allay
any notion that the visit to Israel by John Cardinal O'Connor, the Archbishop of New
York, indicates a modification of the "prerequisites" it
has set for establishing
diplomatic relations with the
Jewish State.
O'Connor said he encountered not the ,"slightest evidence of displeasure" by the
Holy See over his trip and
the fact that he met with two
Israeli leaders, President
Chaim Herzog and Vice Premier and Foreign Minister
Shimon Peres, at their
homes in Jerusalem.
Vatican spokesman Joaquin Navarro Vails issued a
statement to the press last
week noting that Pope Paul
VI met with Golda Meir in
1964 and Pope John Paul II
met with Peres in 1985.
"The State of Israel or its
sovereignty is not at issue,"
he added.
"As is known, the issue regards the status of the city of
Jerusalem, the problem of
the occupied territories and
',. the Palestinian issue. I think
the. acts of courtesy of Cardinal O'Connor do not involve
these problems which must
be solved in appropriate circumstances." .
seriously ill. She said on an
Israel Radio telephone interview Sunday that she plans
to return to Israel as soon as
she can. She expressed
regret over the controversy
aroused by her case.
"I am not a political
animal. When I converted to
Judaism' I believed I was
making an entirely personal
commitment. I suddenly
found myself?in the center of
a public controversy,'' she
said.

Ex-Nazi Stripped
Of U.S. Citizenship
NEW YORK (JTA) - A
former Waffen SS concentration camp guard who fled to
West Germany last August
after admitting to the Justice Department that he had
killed a Jewish inmate in
cold blood, was stripped of
his U.S. citizenship by a Federal District Court Judge in
Newark, N.J. recently.
Stefan Leili, 77, a resident
of Clifton, N.J., was denaturalized on the orders of
Federal Judge Harold
Ackerman when he failed to
appear in court for a hearing
