Israel Bond Sales
$603 Million In'86
NEW YORK (JTA) - A
total of $603 million in cash
proceeds for Israel's economic development, which
represents an increase of $98
million over 1985 results and
close to $200 million more
than 1984 sales, has been announced by the Israel Bond
Organization.
The announcement was
made by David Hermelin of
Detroit, international campaign chairman, and William Belzberg, national
chairman, Vvhodescribed the
1986 accomplishment as "the
most productive Bond campaign by far in the 35-year
history of our organization."
They declared that the
$603 million response in 1986,
which included sales of Israel Bond securities in the
United States, Canada and
countries in Western Europe
and Latin America, "demonstrated the continuing part-

Israel Defense Ministry Nixes
Visits By Two Palestinians To Symposium
JERUSALEM, (JTA) —The Defense Ministry has refused
to allow two prominent Palestinians to attend an international symposium on the Middle East at the University of San
Diego in southern California this week. The ban apparently
does not apply to three other Palestinians invited to the symposium. The two denied permission to leave are Mustapha
Abd A-Nabi Natshe, the former Mayor of Hebron, and Fayez
Abu-Rahme, a lawyer from Gaza. Security sources said
there was concern they would use the occasion to meet with
hostile elements but did not elaborate.
Reagan Administration Not Trying
To Scapegoat Israel In The
Iran Arms Sales-Contra Affair
Rare Printed Hebrew Book
JERUSALEM (JTA)—One of the only five known copies in
the world of the first edition of "Meshal Hakadmoni," the
first illustrated printed Hebrew book, has been added to the
incunabula collection of the Jewish National and University
Library at the Hebrew University, the University announced
recently. The copy wasjdonated to the library by Ludwig Jes-
selson of New York, who purchased it for $175,000, the highest
price ever paid for a Hebrew printed book.-
JERUSALEM, (JTA) -
Premier Yitzhak Shamir received assurances from
Washington last week that
the Reagan Administration
was not trying to scapegoat
Israel in the Iran arms sales-
Contra affair.
Vice Premier and Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres confirmed this to the Knesset's
Foreign Affairs and Security
Committee. He also disclosed that he sent a message of his own to Vice President George Bush reiterating Israel's denial that it was
involved in the transfer of
proceeds from Iranian weapons purchases to the
Nicaraguan rebels, known
as Contras, or that Israel initiated the U.S. arms-sales to
SUPER SUNDAY Proves TO Be 'Heartwarming'
, SUPER SUNDAY Phone
and Funday on Jan. 18 was a
day mixed with serious moments, joyous moments and
a great deal of fun and special community spirit. "It
was cold outside but there
was a warm feeling that prevailed inside the Center as
phone calls were made and
pledges recorded," said
Ruth Ann Blank, 1987
SUPER SUNDAY Chairperson. Beginning with the first
call at 10 a.m. and concluding at 9 p.m., we raised
$103,000 for our fellow Jews
— $10,200 more "than last
year. The result is heartwarming."
More than 200 Columbus
Jewish Federation volunteers phoned 2,000 area
homes on behalf of the 1987
United Jewish Fund Campaign. The volunteers represented all ages and all parts
of the community '... from
teen to senior adult. They
represented the Federation's beneficiary agencies,
Jewish organizations and
synagogues. A highlight of
the day was a visit from
former Ohio State Buckeye
coach, Woody Hayes, during
the Phonathon.
In the afternoon^ SUPER
SUNDAY Funday featured a-
Coney-Island style theme
and beach party atmosphere
with sidewalk vendors,
games sponsored by local
synagogues and community
organizations and entertainment for all ages.
"SUPER SUNDAY Phone
and Funday was really upbeat," said Michael Talis,
SUPER SUNDAY co-chairman, "people came to enjoy
the feeling and spirit of a
special commtuiity day and
we raised a substantial
amount of dollars for our
campaign — that's a terrific
combination."
Ruth Ann Blank added, ''I
iwant to thank everyone who
' helped to make the day such
a success-"-the volunteers—
those of you who joined us at
the Center for this important
community day — and those
of you at home who 'answered the call' and pledged
to the 1987 Campaign, for our
Jewish families here in Columbus, in Israel and around
the world. It was a great
community day."
Members of the SUPER
SUNDAY Committee in
addition to Chairperson,
Ruth Ann Blank and Co-
chairman, Michael Talis
are: Neal Barkan, Wendy
Berkowitz, Ted Bloom,

Iran in 1985.
The impression that Israel
was the prime mover in the
arms sales was contained in
a briefing memorandum to
President Reagan by his
then National Security Advisor, Admiral John Poindex-
ter, released by the White
House last week.
Israel was also agitated by
reports in the U.S. media attributed to Administration
and Congressional sources,
that it was shipping weapons
to the Contras at its own initiative in 1985, unknown to
the U.S. untU "detected" by
American intelligence.
Israeli diplomatic sources
in Washington were quoted
by Israel Radio as expressing concern "that Israel was
now being made a scapegoat" by the White House.
