Yom HaShoah Service Recalls Holocaust By Judith Franklin News Editor "Why am I here tonight?" keynote speaker Rabbi David Stavsky asked the over 500 people who gathered Sunday evening, April 26, at Beth Jacob Synagogue to commemorate the Holocaust with a community Yom HaShoah Service. "Not to add to your pain or mine," Rabbi Stavsky answered, but "because I believe we have a mission." Rabbi Stavsky went on to explain that the mission to which he referred is threefold. Most important, he said, is ".. .never to remain silent when Jewish life hangs in the balance." Second, he stressed, "We must be a people who move forward, achieve and create and leap and jump forward sale. It's not negotiable. It cannot be bartered ... the State of Israel and Jerusalem are ours forever and ever." The Yom HaShoah Service was sponsored, as in the past, by the Columbus Board of Rabbis and was co-ordinated by the Beth Jacob Holocaust Committee, chaired by Irvin Szames, a Holocaust survivor. In addition to Rabbi Stavsky, who with Ben Grinblatt began the local Yom HaShoah program in ,1963, Rabbi Gary 'Huber, president of the Board of Rabbis, (Beth Tikvah); Rabbi Hirsh Chinn (Ahavas Sholom); Rabbi Alan Ciner and Rabbi Samuel Rubenstein (Agudas Achim); Rabbi Howard Apothaker (Beth Shalom); Rabbi Harold Berman (Congregation Tifereth Israel); caust Survivors: Mark Ebner, Barry Gletzer, Masha Bodas, Eric Hoffman, Henry Schwartz and Esther Weissman, lit candles in memory (CONTINUED ON PAGE 7) NEW YORK (JTA) —The latest wave of indictments and arrests of anti-Semitic hate group members in Fort Smith, Ark., and Denver, Colo., is part of one of the Federal government's most aggressive crackdowns on criminal activity among extremists in decades, according to an expert of the Anti- Defamation League of B'nai B'rith; Three federal indictments handed up two weeks ago charged 15 members of white-supremacist hate groups -with the murder -of Denver talk show host Alan Berg, plotting to murder a federal judge and engaging in conspiracy to overthrow the American government. All those charged are affiliated with one of two hate groups, the Aryan Nations and 7 or the Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord (CSA), according to Ir- ' win Suall," ADL fact-finding . ..director. - Two of the most powerful national leaders of the extremist movements were among those charged and arrested, "Reverend" Richard Butler, head of Aryan Nations, arid Robert Miles, a former Ku Klux Klan (KKK) member and Midwest coordinator of Aryan Nations. Butler, 67, is the "pastor" of the vehemently anti-Semitic Church of Jesus Christ Christian in Hayden Lake, Idaho, the headquarters of Aryan Nations. Miles is a one-time Grand Dragon (State leader) of the KKK in Michigan, Four indicted in Murder of Berg - A federal grand jury in Denver indicted four people under the Federal Civil Rights Act in connection with the machine-gun slaying of Berg, a Jewish radio talk show host who provoked racists during his program. Berg was gunned down outside his Denver home in June 1984 The four indicted, all members of The Order, an Aryan Nations splinter group, were David Eden Lane, 48; Richard Joseph Scutari, 39; Bruce Carroll Pierce, 32, a leader of The Order, and Jean Margaret Craig, 53. Lane and Pierce are both affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ Christian in Hayden Lake. Federal authorities allege that Pierce carried the sub- machinegun used to murder Berg and was accompanied by Scutari and Lane. Paperno, who the Cleveland Plain Dealer describes as "clearly remarkable," came from Russia to the United States in 1977 to perform and teach. His career began in the mid-1950s when he was a prizewinner in the fifth International Chopin Competition in Warsaw. He was trained in the Russian tradition at the Tschaikow- sky Conservatoire in Moscow and taught at the Gnesin Moscow Institute. His concert tours took him through Russia, Eastern and Western Europe and Cuba. Now concertizing widely in the United States, Paperno is a member of the faculty of the DePaul University School of Music. A committee has been formed to present this special evening at the Center. Chaired by Augusta Frank, who originated the idea for ~- viheconcert,commrtteemem-. Mel Dodge To Receive JNF Award The Jewish National Fund will bestow its highest national award, "The Tree of Life," on Melvin B. Dodge, president, Greater Columbus Convention and Visitors Bureau.
