Volunteers For Israel
Seeking Participants
The Israel Department of
the Columbus Jewish Federation announces that the National Project for Volunteers
for Israel (SAR-EL) is seeking volunteers for their
Achdut II-Unity Flight to
work in Israel from June 19
returning July 12, 19 or 26.
Participants will volunteer
on a kibbutz, moshav, in a
hospital or army camp.
The Achdut H-Unity Flight
is being called a "repeat performance" of the successful
original Achdut-Unity Flight
held this past year.
Arrangements include a
special El Al flight to Israel
for 460 Volunteers For
Israel. The cost of the program is $448 for students
under 26 years old and $598
for adults (not including an
airport tax of $23). The program fee includes: roundtrip
airfare, work clothes, room
and board, three kosher
meals daily and full-day
tours.

Scholar!Athlete Award Winners Named

program-paced Israel 40 Celebration, introduces

Kimberly Winer of Bexley
and Christopher Stallings of
Dublin have been awarded
this year's Don Erkis/Lou
Berliner High School Jewish
Scholar-Athlete Scholarship
Award. This award is presented annually to outstanding Jewish high school
seniors who have excelled in
the athletic as well as
academic arenas. The community is invited to share in
honoring these two high
school seniors at the Leo
Yassenoff Jewish Center's
Annual Meeting, Wednesday, June 29, at 7:45 p.m. in
the Center's Roth/Resler
Theatre.
Winer currently has a 3.6
GPA at Bexley High School.
She was a member of the National Honor Society and
Quill and Scroll her junior
and senior years and a member of Honor Roll her fresh-
kin was elected to member-

Columbia Scholastic Press
Association competition for
sports column writing.

'Flowers For Living' Award

Jewish Center.

Bernard K. Yenkin will receive the Agudas Achim
Brotherhood "Flowers for
the Living" Award in recognition of his service and
leadership on behalf of the
synagogue, Judaism and the
community on Wednesday,
June 22, at 8p.m., in the
sanctuary of the Agudas
Achim.
A lifetime member of the
Agudas Achim, Yenkin has
led the synagogue as a

Arts To Be Celebrated This Sunday,
June 5, Al Heritage Village With Gala
The arts will be celebrated
this Sunday, June 5th, with
"And All That Jazz," the
opening gala of Sculpture at
Heritage Village 1988. Reservations are limited; however
as of this writting (May 25),
there were still openings.
The gala chairwomen,
Diane Cummins, Debora
Kane and Sara Jo Kobitcker,
have designed an evening
centered around one of the
country's "most ambitious
sculpture y programs."
Thirtyrtwo artists from
across the United States
.(California to New York) are

ranges from a four inch high
chroma-kaleidescope in the
formal gardens to a twenty-
five inch high neon sculpture
near the 1-70 freeway

few touches we believe are
original. Something that
plays off the construction
going on at Heritage House.

The gala will be held on the
campus of Heritage Village,
11.51 College Ave;, at
5:30 p.m. Admission is an
$85 contribution per person.

June 5 Family Picnic
- The Sabra group of Hadassah is planing a family
picnic at Smith Farm for
members and prospective
members and their families
on Sunday, June 5.
The outing will include a
hayride and strawberry
picking. The children will
enjoy the slides and tunnels
in the hay barn. Each family
will bring their own food.
Drinks and dessert will be

Cabinet, Yenkin served as a

Yenkin is a past president
of B'nai B'rith Zion Lodge
and a past president of the
Yale Club of Central Ohio. A
founding Board Member of
Pro Musica Chamber
Orchestra, Yenkin is also a
past president of that group.
In 1984, Bernard and Miriam
Yenkin were recipients of
the Mayor's Award for
Voluntary Service.
Yenkin, who is chairman
of the Board of the Yenkin
Majestic Paint Corp., gradu-
ated from Columbus
Academy and Yale University. He received his MBA
from Harvard Business

success in volleyball, basketball and swimming. She competed on the Bexley Summer
Swim Team for 12 years. She
was a member of the Bexley
High School Basketball Team
her freshman through senior
years and was named to the
second Team All-League and
Honorable Mention All-District her junior and senior
years. In volleyball, Winer
excelled even further. As a
sophomore, she was named
Honorable Mention All-
League. She was named to
the First Team All-League
and First Team All-District
her junior and senior years,
as well as being named Honorable Mention All-State her
senior year.
In Addition, Winer has
been active in community
activities. She was a student
member on the Bexley
Schools Board of Education,
an officer of her student
class two years, president of
the Student Council her
senior year and active with
the school newspaper. Wirier
has also taught swimming,
basketball.and volleyball to
children in the Bexley area.
Stallings currently holds a
3.9 GPA at Dublin High
School and has excelled in a
variety of running events.

Bowl Team; a member of a
runner-up "In The Know"
Team, and the top scorer of
19 schools on J.E.T.S. tests
for biology and math.
Athletically, Stallings has
excelled as a runner. He has
been named Dublin High
School's Most Improved
Runner on the Cross Country
Team, was named Second
Team All-League in cross
country his junior year and
first team All-League his
senior year and was a
regional qualifier in cross
country his junior and senior
years. On the track, Stallings is currently second in
his league in the one and two
mile races; as a junior he
was third in the league in the
.two mile race. Earlier this
year, he won the Whetstone
Invitational one mile event
and has placed in numerous
track and road races
throughout the Midwest.
Stallings has also been involved in a number of other
activities including his job,
the High School Band, Buckeye Boys' State and National
Honor Society.
Eleven other Jewish candidates from Central Ohio
also qualified to be recognized by this award. Each of
these candidates met the requirements of obtaining at
least a 3.0 GPA while excelling in a club level or high
school sport.
Samuel Alpert holds a 3.8
GPA at Reynoldsburg High
School. He is a National*
Merit Commended Scholar,
a member of the National
Honor Society and was
named Honorable Mention
by ,the High School Press
vClub of Central Ohio. Athletically, Alpert is a member of
the high school tennis team,
was a member of the Columbus Maccabi team in racquetball, soccer and tennis
and enjoys skiing.
Melissa Goldberg has a 3.5
GPA at Columbus School for
Girls. She is currently President of her school's Spanish
Club and has placed in state
and national Spanish tests
the past four years. Goldberg earned ten varsity letters at CSG while one the
tennis, basketball and track
teams. She was named All-
League in tennis in 1987 and
Honorable Mention All-
League in Basketball.
